According to the Des Moines Register, U.S. Sen. Barack Obama’s campaign has spoken with an official at the Mississippi Fairgrounds about a possible trip to Davenport just as the Democratic National Convention in Denver gets under way:

Bob Fox, general manager of the Mississippi Valley Fairgrounds, said he met with Obama campaign officials this morning, who said they were planning a campaign stop in Davenport Monday.

Fox said a final decision about where the event would be held had not been made.

Obama is expected to announce his long-awaited choice for the vice presidential nomination between now and then. There is no word on whether the Illinois senator’s runningmate might accompany him to Davenport.

Update (1:00PM): In a press release, the Obama campaign has confirmed that Sen. Obama will stop in the Quad Cities as part of a “Battleground State Tour” leading up to his acceptance of the Democratic nomination at Denver’s Invesco Field. Still no word on the runningmate.

Things are bound to get a little scary in the Quad Cities next month when Donald Borchers, director and producer of a remake of the 1983 horror movie “Children of the Corn” begins filming.

According to David Burke of the Quad City Times, Borchers chose the Quad Cities after receiving a recommendation from Tom Wheeler, manager of the film office in the Iowa Department of Economic Development.

“My needs are quite simple. I need corn,” Borchers said. “And I understand you have that throughout the state.”

The original film, based on a Stephen King novella, was shot in the Sioux City area. Many who have come to view the film as a cult classic will want to know that Borchers plans to have the remake — especially in terms of the previously watered-down ending — remain more true to King’s writings.

The film will be shot in September and is expected to air on the Sci-Fi Channel next year and in European theaters. Since 1938, more than 100 films have been shot in Iowa.

Republican Presidential candidate Rudy Giuliani
claimed Tuesday in Bettendorf that “probably you’ll never elect a president
who has put more people in jail than me, if you elect
me.” This drew some laughs but much of his talk was
serious as he recalled his years enforcing drug laws
and keeping New York City safe.

As part of an Eastern Iowa tour designed to showcase
his commitment to increasing the number of adoptions,
decreasing abortions and improving the quality of
life for children, Rudy Giuliani spoke and took
questions at a town hall meeting inside the Bettendorf
High School Fine Arts Center. His new emphasis on
children and abortion issues is viewed by many as
reaching out to conservative voters unable to accept
some of Giuliani’s more liberal views. Video coverage is available below the fold.

During the question-and-answer part of the meeting,
one man wondered if he would need a Karl Rove or Dick
Cheney to advise him in the White House. Giuliani
laughed at this idea, but was quick to praise Bush and
his advisers.

His rare, faint praise for Democrats came when he
noted that the Dems’ criticism of past Republican
earmarks had been on the mark. But he scored points
with the largely white-skinned, white-haired audience
when he revealed that in the eight months since
November 2006, the Democratically controlled Congress
had made about 36,000 requests for earmarks, well
beyond the number made by a Republican Congress,
declaring that “the most Republicans did was about
20,000 (in eight months).”

His campaign day included stops in Davenport,
Bettendorf, Clinton, Dubuque and Maquoketa.

In the following seven-minute video from the event (below the fold), an attendee
from Bettendorf talks about the reasons she endorses
Giuliani and the issues she feels are most
important. Also hear Giuliani’s responses to
questions about controlling earmark spending by
Congress and his ideas on legal and illegal
immigration.
