Despite offering the court $3.75 million for bail, former Agriprocessors chief executive Sholom Rubashkin will remain in federal custody.
People in and around the small northern Iowa community of Postville have been gathering donations to help care for former Agriprocessors employees left in the lurch by the mass arrest, deportations of immigrant workers, and layoffs resulting from the firm’s legal problems, and the tempers of those cast out are beginning to flare.
U.S. Magistrate Judge Jon Scoles heard arguments in federal court this afternoon on the possible release of Sholom M. Rubashkin, the former chief executive of Agriprocessors in Postville. A written ruling is expected tomorrow.

The arrest of Agriprocessors CEO Sholom Rubashkin on bank fraud charges earlier today marked the fourth time that he or his brother has been alleged to have engaged in financial deception.
Sholom Rubashkin, former chief executive at the Agriprocessors kosher meatpacking plant in Postville, was arrested again this morning by federal authorities on a charge of bank fraud.
Update: Rubashkin will remain in temporary custody pending a preliminary and detention hearing scheduled for Nov. 19.

Jewish rabbis were not paid Friday, and it was not the first time time. Other employees did receive paychecks, although some voiced concern that the checks may not clear. The rabbis were asked for patience and promised payments as soon as possible.
According to a source who attended a meeting Friday with upper management, the plant plans to concentrate on poultry production — particularly on chicken — in the near future. The plant’s beef line has operated only sporadically over the past two weeks.

That was the phrase uttered time and time again as residents in and around Postville were asked to describe what’s happened this week in their community.
Nearly six months after federal authorities swarmed the small town of Postville and detained roughly half of a kosher meatpacking plant’s workforce on suspected immigration violations, shock waves are still being felt throughout Iowa and the nation.
Sholom Rubashkin, the former chief executive officer and vice president of Agriprocessors, has been charged by the U.S. Attorney’s Office with conspiracy to harbor undocumented aliens for profit, aiding and abetting document fraud, and aiding and abetting aggravated identity theft.
