Breaking: Rubashkin arrested, will appear in federal court today

Federal prosecutors have arrested Sholom Rubashkin, former chief executive officer and vice president at Agriprocessors and son of company founder Aaron Rubashkin, on a criminal complaint that alleges the man conspired in immigration-related offenses.


Situation at Agriprocessors ‘off limits to outside scrutiny’ says Rabbi

“As the supervising rabbi for all glatt kosher meat and strictly kosher poultry at the Agriprocessors plant in Postville, I am responsible for the well-being of the slaughterers (shochtim) and supervising (mashgichim) rabbis,” said Weissmandl in an e-mail to Iowa Independent on Thursday. “To protect the integrity of the kashruth, their relationship is strictly with us. Under no circumstances can we permit that this relationship be compromised and thus is off limits to outside scrutiny, as is prescribed by Jewish law.”


Agriprocessors ‘categorically denies’ child labor charges

A spokesman for Agriprocessors, the largest kosher meatpacking plant in the nation and Postville’s largest employer, is firing back at Iowa Labor Commissioner Dave Neil for Tuesday’s “inflammatory” remarks.


Iowa Labor Commissioner: ‘Egregious violations’ at Agriprocessors

The first portion of an investigation into possible child labor violations at Agriprocessors in Postville is closed, and findings have been turned over the Iowa Attorney General for prosecution.

The Iowa Labor Commissioner’s Office said the investigation was “intensive” and produced 57 cases that each have multiple child labor violations. A second arm of the investigation as well as an investigation into general wage violations remain ongoing and may lead to additional charges.

Answering media inquiries and consulting with an attorney wasn’t exactly how Rabbi Morris Allen wanted to spend his vacation. When he learned, however, that someone associated with a New York-based public relations firm hired by Agriprocessors was impersonating him online, he knew his vacation plans were subject to change.
