Four anti-war activists who attempted to arrest former White House adviser Karl Rove when he visited Des Moines in July will stand trial today in a Polk County court.

Facing charges of trespassing are retired Methodist minister Chet Guinn; two members of the Des Moines Catholic Worker Community, Edward Bloomer and Mona Shaw; and former group member Kirk Brown.

The four attempted a citizen’s arrest of Rove on July 25 at the Wakonda County Club on Des Moines’ south side. They were stopped at the country club’s entry gate. They accused Rove of felony murder, election fraud, conspiracy to commit offense or defraud the United States leading to the war in Iraq, as well as treason, sedition and subversive activities.

Rove’s July visit was the second time Shaw and Brown had attempted to make a citizen’s arrest, the first coming in March at the University of Iowa.

Jury selection in the case was expected to begin this morning, with the actual trial starting after lunch.

(Click) “Shameful!…” “War Criminal!…” “Liar!…”

And so began the Eighty-Four Minute Hate at the University of Iowa, reminiscent of George Orwell’s Two-Minute Hate in “1984,” featuring Karl Rove, former member of President Bush’s Inner Party, and those who have come to despise him. (see video belwo the fold)Abridged Video of Karl Rove’s Eighty-Four Minute Hate (filmed by Iowa Independent’s Adam Burke)

While serving under Bush, Rove, dubbed “The Architect,” was credited with helping orchestrate Bush’s campaign victories in 2000 and 2004. For his behind-the-curtain efforts, The Wizard of D.C. has been lauded as a political-strategy genius on the right, while some members on the left, who are still scratching their heads and asking themselves how Bush could get elected not once, but twice, have conceded this title.

However, not everyone has been impressed with Rove, who, for the left has metamorphosed into the Poster Boy of Hate, temporarily usurping the Throne of Hate from current Inner-Party member and reigning vice president, Dick Cheney.

And now, while the Inner Party and its chief monetary benefactors, The Military Industrial Complex, keep profiting from pumping fear and hate into the economy, Rove has left the Inner Party, at least literally, and has begun testing the private market value of hate by peddling his wares on the lecture circuit.

While the Bush administration’s Orwellian Two-Minute Hate consists of projecting interchangeable figureheads such as Osama bin Laden, North Korean Dictator Kim Jong II and Iran President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad on the television screen, Rove’s has hit the road with his live rendition of Eight-Four-Minute Hate. At a nominal speaking fee of $40,000, audience members get a chance to spew their contempt for Rove in a public forum.

Such was the case at the UI when Rove took the stage and was greeted by a chorus of boos and cheers. The latter consisted of Rove’s supporters, who not only came to see Rove but to hate on the haters. The evening’s hate fest went something like this:

Heckler shouts question at Rove, who responds by attacking the question, followed by more attacks from the audience, thus inspiring Rove to attack the questioner, which drew applause from his supporters, which drew boos from his haters, and the cycle repeated itself as the hate momentarily subsided until the next round of hate began.

The Architect’s plan was working. Rove had become a performance artist reminiscent of comedian Andy Kaufman, who exploited hate mongering for monetary gain. When Kaufman’s career turned to professional wrestling, in particular wrestling women, his target audience grew a certain disdain for him, yet paid to see him perform anyhow. Rove has adopted the same formula, but in order for this formula to be successful, you need an audience.

The UI community provided just that as members of the UI Anti-War Committee staged protests beforehand, local peace activists attempted to conduct a citizen arrest of Rove, and random audience members used the event to voice their unsolicited disdain during the Eighty-Four-Minute Hate.

And like a clown at a carnival dunk tank, Rove egged on the audience and made fun of the hecklers, oftentimes forgetting that he’s not a trained professional comedian. His attempts at witticism never rose too far above the coping crutches of the I-know-you-are-but-what-am-I caliber. The same could be true for some of the comments shouted at him from the hate groundlings, thus perpetuating the hate cycle and negating any possibility of an intelligent discourse. Granted, the latter would put a damper on Rove’s new shtick, driving down his market value on the college lecture circuit.

If the anti-Rove movement really wanted to make a statement, they should have silenced him by not showing up or attacked him with a surge of love. The profit margin for espousing love is nominal at best, unless of course you are Hallmark.

Filling up the IMU only serves to legitimize Rove and verbally attacking him plays into his hands, not to mention it does little to end the war in Iraq.

Hopefully, Rove’s lecture appearance at the UI will serve as a blueprint for what not to do for future colleges that plan on paying him to come speak at their respective institutions. The best way to usurp Rove’s power is by turning off the Eighty-Four-Minute Hate.

After all, just because Big Brother is watching doesn’t mean we have to.

(Click. White Noise.)

The event was protested by hundreds of peace activists, but fans of the controversial political strategist were also present.

While the delay provided more time for some community members to stew about Rove’s appearance and the $40,000 speaking fee, it also gave anti-Rove contingencies such as the UI Anti-War Committee, Iowans for Peace, and Iraq Veterans Against the War (see pic below) an opportunity to organize protest efforts.

Karl Rove: Take Two. The former deputy chief of staff and senior advisor to President George W. Bush, will speak at 7:30 p.m. tonight, in the Iowa Memorial Union on the University of Iowa campus.Rove was originally scheduled to speak Feb. 17, but the event was postponed due to inclement weather, thus providing anti-Rove contingencies more time to organize a staged protest against the controversial speaker.

The day’s anti-Rove festivities begin as early as 2 p.m., when a group of bands, collectively called the “Seeds of Dissent,” take the stage at The Mill Restaurant in downtown Iowa City in protest of the Rove lecture. The UI Anti-War Committee (UIAC) is organizing a protest outside the IMU, which begins two hours before the scheduled event and is expected to draw 200-300 protesters. Events include a street demonstration, live political dance music provided by the School of Flyentology, street theater, and a variety of campus groups will be tabeling and leafleting for their respective causes.

While the UIAC supports the UI Lecture Committee’s attempt at bringing balance to its lecture series by hosting conservative speakers, the group takes issue with the committee’s decision to pay $40,000 to Rove, who they deem a war criminal.

UIAW member David Goodner takes issue with Rove’s refusal to testify about his involvement in the firing of several U.S. attorneys, despite a congressional subpoena the U.S. Senate Judiciary Committee’s vote to hold him in contempt.

“If Rove is innocent and has nothing to hide, why won’t he testify in front of Congress?,” Goodner writes on his Des Moines Register blog, “Straight Out of the Cornfield.” “If the Bush Administration acted fairly and lawfully, why is Bush claiming that “executive privilege” exempts his current and former aides from testifying? If the Senate Judiciary Committee agreed with the “executive privilege” claim, why did they vote to hold Rove in contempt? Why would the entire House hold two other Bush aides in contempt for refusing to cooperate with the investigation?”

Despite the planned protests outside the IMU, UI officials are not expecting any disturbances during Rove’s lecture, but are aware of the possibilities.

“We don’t want to stifle any voices,” Sharon Benzoni, a UI senior and chairwoman of the event’s sponsor the UI Lecture Committee, told the Press-Citizen. “I don’t have any problems with someone dressing in a robot suit as long as they are not hiding something. … We have a step-by-step process (for dealing with disruptions) so no one gets out of control with a Taser. We are very aware we need to be nonviolent.”

Benzoni is alluding to UI professor Kembrew McLeod, who, dressed as a robot infiltrated the IMU and interrupted former President Bill Clinton’s speech a few months ago. McLeod demanded that Clinton, who was stumping on behalf of his wife, Hillary, apologize to Sister Souljah for “dissing” her in 1992.

Bill Searls, associate director of public safety, told the Press-Citizen that there haven’t been any arrests at recent events and isn’t expecting any tonight. “My plan is to work with organizers and IMU staff to make sure things go smoothly and to make sure people are safe. I don’t want to make it an adversarial relationship,” he said. “You prepare for things, and 99 percent of the time they don’t happen.”

The format of the venue will provide an opportunity for members of the audience to ask questions, thus providing voices of dissent an opportunity to ask Rove questions. This will follow a formal interview by Frank Durham, UI professor of journalism.

Nonetheless, event organizers aren’t leaving anything to chance and have banned all recording devices, per Rove’s stipulations in his speaking contract. Students and attendees will not be allowed to bring in book bags, backpacks, or any other large objects that may be considered a security risk.

“We understand people will have cell phones, and if anyone is seen recording with that they will be taken away,” Benzoni told the Press-Citizen. “Hopefully, there won’t be any terrible incidents to broadcast, but if something does happen, I do think that should be seen. I would not be surprised if video was taken.”

Karl Rove, former deputy chief of staff and senior advisor to President George W. Bush, is scheduled to speak on the University of Iowa campus Sunday night. Rove’s public appearance, however, does come with a hitch — for the media anyhow.

A note to the media released by UI News Services stipulates that during the lecture: “Television and radio journalists and news videographers and photographers may shoot and tape the event for the first five minutes of Rove’s remarks. After that, reporters may take notes, but no recording devices may be used.” Rove, however, has given UI Television (UITV) permission to broadcast the complete lecture after the event.

“These types of media restrictions aren’t unprecedented, and we’ve done them before,” Tom Snee of UI News Services told the Iowa Independent. “Bill Clinton’s lecture in 2003 and Janet Reno’s a few years back had the same stipulations. For Reno, her reasoning was proprietary issues. This is how she was making her living at the time, and she didn’t want people taping her speeches. This would essentially be the equivalent of giving her product away. I’m not sure what Rove’s reasons are.”

This is not the first time Rove’s media restrictions have garnered media attention. Over the weekend, Rove barred the media from covering a speech at Choate Rosemary Hall, a prestigious prep school in Connecticut.

From a legal standpoint, Rove is within his rights regarding media stipulations, says Nick Johnson, visiting professor of law at UI and a former member of the Federal Communications Commission. “Contractually, that is a matter the lecturer can control, so the stipulations are between Karl Rove and the UI Lecture Committee,” Johnson said. “Rove knows that whatever he says and does will be news outside the range of Iowa City. If news gets around to other campuses what he says, then this will lessen the economic value of what he’s doing.”

Phone messages were left with members of the UI Lecture Committee the past two days, but none responded to the Iowa Independent’s inquiries.

Rove’s appearance, scheduled to begin at 7:30 p.m in the main lounge of the Iowa Memorial Union (IMU), is sponsored by the UI Lecture Committee, a presidential charter committee whose membership consists of students, faculty and staff. Admission to Rove’s lecture, “Reflections from The Architect,” is free and open to the public. The series and Rove’s $40,000 speaking fee are funded through student fees with select lectures supported in part by the F. Wendell Miller Fund. In 2003, former President Bill Clinton received a $50,000 speaking fee for his lecture at Carver Hawkeye Arena.

Also participating in the lecture will be Frank Durham, professor of journalism in the School of Journalism and Mass Communication in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, who will interview Rove. A question-and-answer session will follow the on-stage interview.

The media won’t be the only ones restricted in what they bring into the IMU Sunday night. Certain items will not be allowed into the main lounge during the lecture, including large parcels, handbags, bottles, cans, signs and cameras or any other kind of recording device. No bags or backpacks will be allowed, and only purses smaller than 8 1/2 x 11 are allowed. All visitors are subject to search, and university officials reserve the right to allow entry.
