Former Wells Fargo employee says race played a factor in subprime lending
A former loan officer for Wells Fargo & Co. told Democracy Now’s Amy Goodman that accusations of racially biased lending practices at the nation’s largest mortgage provider are true.
The revelations could resonate in Iowa, where two groups have made similar accusations against the company.
Iowa foreclosures increased in 2008
Nearly 5,400 Iowa properties had foreclosure filings in 2008. That marks a 31 percent increase from 2007 and a staggering 136 percent increase from 2006.
National housing crisis mostly spares Iowa
Iowa ranked 35th in the country in total properties with foreclosure filings for November. One in every 2,529 Iowa housing units received a foreclosure filing during the month, earning the Hawkeye State a 38th-place ranking among the states.
