Staed calls for recount in HD 37

The Linn County Auditor’s Office will soon be conducting a recount of an extremely close race in Iowa House District 37.
Art Staed, Democratic incumbent for the seat, requested the recount of all affected precincts late Friday afternoon. When Linn County Supervisors certified the vote on Wednesday, Staed trailed Republican Carolyn Renee Schulte by 14 votes.


Iowa House races decided by slim margins

Not all Democrats enjoyed an Obama-esque margin of victory Tuesday night.
Democrats in the Iowa House say they picked up one seat Tuesday night, with two more races still being tabulated.  Some of them were real squeakers.


Cedar Rapids stands up during ‘Veterans Stand Down’ event

If there was one common thread among the volunteers gathered at the Armed Forces Reserve Center in Cedar Rapids on Friday it was simply that our nation’s veterans “deserve better than this.”

Roughly 50 veterans — some homeless and others nearly homeless — were offered free services ranging from dental and health exams to haircuts to survival kits. In addition to the veterans, the annual event also serviced about 35 non-veterans who were in need.
