Senate immigration hearing finds common ground, partisan differences

The current employment-based immigration system is dysfunctional and needs reform, panelists and lawmakers stated at a Senate Judiciary committee hearing on Tuesday. Judiciary Chair Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) presided over the hearing, which heard testimony from leaders in the business, higher education and immigrant communities, as well as three American mayors.

The Iowa Tea Party kicks off its three-week bus tour across the Hawkeye State today in Council Bluffs, with an appearance by former New Mexico governor and GOP candidate Gary Johnson. So far, confirmed guests include U.S. Rep. Michele Bachmann (R-Minn), Atlanta businessman Herman Cain and former U.S. House Speaker Newt Gingrich. Bus-tour organizers said they are still waiting for confirmation from former U.S. Sen. Rick Santorum’s and former Gov. Tim Pawlenty’s staffs.
