Wednesday was a difficult day for The American Independent News Network, which is the larger entity that operates The Iowa Independent. Our chief executive and founder announced two of our sister sites would close and their content would be moved to The American Independent.
A recently introduced bill could have far-reaching impact on the U.S. sugar industry, including American Crystal Sugar, a farmer-owned cooperative that locked out 1,300 Midwest workers on Aug. 1.
The chairman for Herman Cain’s Iowa effort says the campaign “relied more on the word of farmers than Washington regulators” in deciding to run an ad containing claims the Environmental Protection Agency says are false.

Video: Interview with Iowa Vet Fighting Problems with Health Care and Illegal Immigration
Two Republican candidates talked about their approach to health care and cancer today in Cedar Rapids. The event drew less than half the audience of the previous day’s Democratic forum, which was sponsored by Livestrong, the Lance Armstrong Foundation.
I spoke with one attendee, J. Michael Haskins of Iowa City, mostly about veterans’ health care. He also talked about a connection between health care and his work with the Johnson County chapter of the Minuteman Civil Defense Corps. And he discusses his project, “For a Better America.”
Video interview available below the fold.
Haskins is a Tom Tancredo supporter, but on this day he gave some accolades to Mike Huckabee. Haskins wears many hats and says he’s committed to “a better America…a better government,” which can be achieved only through bipartisan efforts.
Kansas Sen. Sam Brownback was the other Republican candidate at the forum moderated by MSNBC’s Chris Matthews and Lance Armstrong.
