HD 37 recount slated to begin Monday

By Lynda Waddington | 11.21.08 | 7:39 pm

A recount for Iowa House District 37, an area that encompasses primarily northeastern Cedar Rapids, is set to begin Monday morning. When certified by the Linn County Board of Supervisors Nov. 12, Republican challenger Renee Schulte had a 14 votes edge over Democratic incumbent Art Staed.

When requesting the recount on Nov. 14, Staed indicated his designee for the three-person recount board would be Cedar Rapids attorney Steve Jackson. Jackson, however, could not serve due to other commitments. Military veteran Joe Stutler was then appointed by Staed as his representative.

Schulte chose Jeff Elgin, a Republican who previously represented District 37 in the legislature. Both Elgin and Stutler are residents of the District.

The final member of the three-person recount board was selected by District Court Judge David Remley Friday morning, when the representatives from the opposing campaigns could not come to a mutual decision.  Nick Gloe, who does not reside in the District, will serve as the third member.

The trio will meet with officials from the Linn County Auditor’s Office on Saturday morning to determine the procedures that will guide the recount. Actual counting will begin on Monday at 9:15 a.m.
