The Iowa Farmers Union will hold its annual convention in Des Moines this weekend, starting Friday.
Members of the organization and guests will gather at the Des Moines Airport Holiday Inn for the two-day convention. Friday's events include a welcome by Iowa Farmers Union President Chris Peterson and afternoon sessions to formulate the organization's 2007-2008 policy platform. The day will conclude with a reception featuring Iowa wines and foods.
On Saturday, the convention will be addressed by keynote speaker Rep. Stephanie Herseth Sandlin, D-S.D.
Herseth Sandlin is South Dakota's only member of the House of Representatives. She serves on the House Agriculture Committee and is leader of the Blue Dog Coalition, a group of moderate Democrats committed to fiscal discipline and strong national security.
Other speakers scheduled to appear include National Farmers Union President Tom Buis and Susan L. Roberts, director of the Food & Society Policy Fellows Program at the Thomas Jefferson Agricultural Institute. Afternoon workshops will focus on topics such as sales of agricultural products, creative land transfer to encourage sustainability and the National Farmers Union carbon credit program.
