AMES – The campaign of former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney actively solicited Straw Poll votes from staff members of at least two Democratic presidential campaigns in the days leading up to the poll here in Ames.
Multiple sources confirm that, days before the Straw Poll, paid staff members from the Mitt Romney for President campaign entered more than one Democratic campaign field office in Ames to invite the paid staff in those offices to vote for the former Massachusetts governor at the event.
While none of our sources took the Romney campaign’s offer of free food and a free ticket in exchange for their votes, numerous Democratic campaign operatives were spotted Saturday on the grounds of Iowa State University.
Romney, who reinforced the notion that he is running as a strong conservative in his Straw Poll speech, has been known for taking more liberal policy positions in previous campaigns.
The number of Democratic operatives who may have voted in Saturday’s Straw Poll/GOP fund-raiser is unlikely to have affected its outcome, but the extent to which Romney’s staff recruited votes shows how seriously campaigns are taking the contest.
