Whirlpool cuts 440 jobs in Amana

By Lynda Waddington | 10.09.08 | 4:16 pm

It wasn’t too long ago that workers at the Whirlpool plant in Amana were working extended shifts in order to meet an increased demand, but today employees learned that 440 workers would soon face layoffs.

Jill Saletta, director of external communications for Whirlpool, said the voluntary and involuntary job cuts will take place over the next 10 days and can be traced back to current economic instability.

“Our employees at the plant were notified today about layoffs that are coming,” Saletta siad in a phone interview this afternoon. “There are 440 individuals affected. One hundred and ten are voluntary. The balance, or 330, are involuntary.”

Whirlpool purchased Maytag for $1.7 billion in 2005 and subsequently shut down the company’s headquarters in Newton in 2006, costing the community roughly 1,800 jobs. When the decision was made to close the Newton facilities, Whirlpool management said operations would be expanded in Amana to provide up to 400 jobs over a two-year period.

Whirlpool received $5 million in state incentives to expand the Amana facility in exchange for its promise to keep and create jobs in Iowa.

At the rate the economy is falling, Whirlpool is going to one of the major companies to go down, unless, they are able to receive state incentives to add jobs and keep plants open. There has to be some malfunction somewhere if they are not using the millions to expand Amana. Is there some kind of legality that states they have to use that money for the purpose they were granted it for? They certainly aren't putting it into the Whirlpool/Maytag retiree pension funds. So where is that money going? I guarrantee you there are some top CEOs and other executives walking around with fat wallets while I, for one worry every day…Am I going to lose my pension, health benefits or drug program. Whirlpool bought Maytag which included the pensions we sacrificed things for. It's like taking out a loan but deciding to only pay back part of it. They don't realize that a lot of former Maytag and Whirlpool employees are recommending that people NOT buy products made by either. I know I won't. The way they are operating is bad for business, I'd say but I'm not in the top CEOs making millions for a do-nothing job either.

I still see whirlpool parts on the market and some new models as well. I think they are stil there and continue to kick as hard as they can in order to survive.
