Wednesday was a difficult day for The American Independent News Network, which is the larger entity that operates The Iowa Independent. Our chief executive and founder announced two of our sister sites would close and their content would be moved to The American Independent.
A recently introduced bill could have far-reaching impact on the U.S. sugar industry, including American Crystal Sugar, a farmer-owned cooperative that locked out 1,300 Midwest workers on Aug. 1.
The chairman for Herman Cain’s Iowa effort says the campaign “relied more on the word of farmers than Washington regulators” in deciding to run an ad containing claims the Environmental Protection Agency says are false.

Members of the occupy movement interrupted U.S. Rep. Michele Bachmann’s scheduled foreign policy speech in South Carolina Thursday, forcing the candidate to exit the stage.
Similar to a recent protest of Wisconsin’s Gov. Scott Walker in Chicago, the demonstrators read and echoed sentiments on prepared pages. Eyewitness reports indicate that roughly 20 demonstrators affiliated with Occupy Charleston took part in disturbance.
A statement on the Occupy Charleston Facebook page read, “Today Occupy Charleston shut down a speech by presidential candidate Michele Bachmann. Together in unison we took advantage of the moment to address the system and the people within it as to the unjust role of corporate money in politics. Michele Bachmann was not our target in this action; she is a representative of the institutional and legal corruption that has infected our country — a system of corruption that values profit over people and is driven by the financial interests of the few against the many.
Political candidates have the finances to create a spectacle to promote the interests of the 1%. This is an ability that is not afforded to the vast majority of the people. Our actions were an attempt to break that spell and to give voice to the 99% and their interests which have too long been ignored by the political establishment. This is not a Democratic or a Republican issue, this transcends petty party politics.”
After the demonstrators had left the USS Yorktown aircraft carrier where the event was being held, Bachmann returned to the stage and asked those remaining in the crowd, “Don’t you just love the First Amendment? It’s great. We have a great country and I want to thank you all for your understanding.”
