A majority of donors to candidates for state office support some kind of public financing of elections, according to a phone survey conducted for Iowa Citizens for Community Improvement.
The survey, which consisted of phone interviews with 1,502 people who have donated to state political campaigns, found that 88 percent agreed that there is too much money in the political process. Another 73 percent support public financing of elections, an idea Iowa CCI has been advocating for many years.
Eighty-one percent of those polled that have a household income over $100,000 and 74 percent of those with a household income less than $100,000 supported public financiing of elections.
An outside consultant was hired by Iowa CCI to conduct the survey, in which 2,861 donors were contacted.
