Iowa delegation splits on failed bailout

By admin | 09.29.08 | 2:11 pm

Iowa’s congressional delegation split 2-3 on the $700 billion bailout proposal rejected by Congress today.

Both Iowa Republicans — U.S. Reps. Steve King and Tom Latham — voted against the bill, along with Democratic U.S. Rep. Bruce Braley. Iowa’s two other Democrats, U.S. Reps. Leonard Boswell and Dave Loebsack, went along with the leaders of both parties and supported the bill.

Polling on the bailout has been mixed over the past week, but these were likely votes of conscience and not political calculations. Of Iowa’s five congressmen, only Latham faces a serious challenge at the ballot box this November.

Define “serious challenge.” This is the kind of analysis that Stu Rothernberg laid on us not long ago: it's a red district, end ot story.

King is not running any sort of campaign and it is too late to do anything but buy media. McCain has essentially pulled out of Iowa, so he will not be running a big GOTV operation in the Fifth, or any, district.

Meanwhile, Rob Hubler has an aggressive field campaign, is raising money rapidly, and has polling that shows King is really vulnerable. A little more cash for late media and you will be redefining your terms.
