Santorum supports early states, 2012 calendar

By Lynda Waddington | 10.01.11 | 7:40 am

Former Pennsylvania Sen. Rick Santorum is making his support of the party calendar and the role of the early states clear.

“Anyone who’s watch the debates realizes that, even as Republicans, there are many issues we don’t agree on — but there are two things we should agree on: Barack Obama has to go and Iowa, New Hampshire and South Carolina should remain first in the presidential primary process,” Santorum said.

Santorum’s comments follow a Friday announcement by Florida officials that their state’s primary will be held on Jan. 31, 2012 in violation of national nomination calendar rules that have Iowa and New Hampshire leading the process.

“These early states have the deserved reputation of testing candidates and ensuring the emergence of the strongest Republican presidential nominee,” Santorum continued. “The Republican parties in the early states can count on my support to help maintain their vital role in the process. And I ask the other Republican candidates to have the courage to join me in supporting the early states.”
