Wednesday was a difficult day for The American Independent News Network, which is the larger entity that operates The Iowa Independent. Our chief executive and founder announced two of our sister sites would close and their content would be moved to The American Independent.
Karger intends to debate in Ames
Little known GOP candidate Fred Karger said after garnering two percent in the latest Harris poll, he has qualified to debate next Thursday in Ames with his GOP opponents, and fully intends to do so.
In a Friday letter to Iowa GOP chair Matt Strawn and media officials from Fox News, Karger said he has met the last criteria to be considered a debate contender, which is to earn a one percent average in “in five national polls based on most recent polling leading up to the registration day.”
Karger has been ranked at two percent in a Thursday Harris poll; at 1 percent in a July 25 Zogby poll; at 1 percent in a May 23 Zogby poll; at one percent in an April 28 Fox New poll, and finally at less than one percent in a June 29 McClathy-Marist poll, according to his letter.
The letter states:
I am a declared Republican candidate for President of the United States who meets all of the requirements to participate in the Fox News Debate on August 11, 2011 in Ames Iowa.
Your criteria states:
Candidates must satisfy the following by 4 p.m. CDT on Tuesday, August 9, 2011
1. Registered with the Federal Elections Commission as a presidential exploratory committee or presidential campaign.
2. Meet all U.S. Constitutional requirements.
3. Garnered at least an average of one percent in five national polls based on most recent polling leading up to the registration day.
Attached is a new national poll that came out yesterday. It was conducted by Harris Interactive, sample size 1,168 that was in the field between August 2 – 4, 2011. The Harris Poll tested all 12 major declared Republican candidates for President. I am at 2%, tied with former Governors Tim Pawlenty and Jon Huntsman. With this latest national poll, I now meet your objective criteria of averaging at least 1% in five national polls.
I look forward to participating in the August 11, 2011 debate in Ames, Iowa and await all details.
Thank you for hosting the Republican debates.
The Fox News GOP debate will happen two days before the Ames Straw Poll. Karger is not a Straw Poll contender, nor is he on the ballot.
Karger, of California, has been a political consultant and gay rights activist. He is the first openly gay presidential candidate.
