Wednesday was a difficult day for The American Independent News Network, which is the larger entity that operates The Iowa Independent. Our chief executive and founder announced two of our sister sites would close and their content would be moved to The American Independent.
Sorenson, Zaun make Bachmann support official
Two GOP state senators, Kent Sorenson of Indianola and Brad Zaun of Urbandale, will serve as local leaders of the Bachmann for President campaign.
It’s been no secret in Iowa that U.S. Rep. Michele Bachmann (R-Minn.) would have the backing of Sorenson if she chose to pursue a bid for the 2012 Republican nomination. On Tuesday, Bachmann’s campaign made it official by announcing that Sorenson, an evangelical and tea party favorite, will serve as chairman of their Iowa effort.
“Our country is on the wrong track and in desperate need of strong leaders to charter a new course to prosperity. I believe that Michele Bachmann is that leader and an unwavering conservative voice for the American people,” Sorenson said in a prepared statement.
Also joining the Bachmann team is Zaun, also a favorite with religious conservatives. During the last election cycle, Zaun managed to win a heated GOP primary in the 3rd Congressional District, but failed to unseat Democratic incumbent Leonard Boswell.
According to the Bachmann campaign, Zaun will serve as state co-chairman.
“I can’t wait to roll up my sleeves and get to work for Michele Bachmann in Iowa,” Zaun said. “In this race for president, Michele has shown she has the credentials and experience needed to help solve the difficult issues facing the American people. With her leadership, we will be on our way to making Barack Obama a one-term president.”
In making the announcement, the campaign touted both Zaun’s and Sorenson’s experiences as a previous business owners, as well as their emphasis on conservative values while serving in the Iowa Legislature.
