And then there were nine GOP presidential contenders, for now anyhow. Former Virginia Gov. Jim Gilmore announced in a written statement today that he’s ended his presidential bid, contending the front-loaded primary schedule “have made it impractical to continue.”
The polls in Iowa showed Gilmore’s candidacy never really took off or resonated in Iowa. Most polls indicated Gilmore registering in at 1 or 2 percent. These numbers didn’t help Gilmore generate any cash flow. Gilmore’s second-quarter FEC financial disclosure indicated Gilmore had about $90,000 cash in hand.
“I have come to believe that it takes more than a positive vision for our nation’s future to successfully compete for the presidency,” Gilmore said in the written statement. “I believe that it takes years of preparation to put in place both the political and financial infrastructure to contest what now amounts to a one-day national primary in February.”
