Barbour: ‘Americans are tired of happy talk’

Decision on 2012 candidacy will be made in April
By Lynda Waddington | 03.28.11 | 11:00 am

TIFFIN — Mississippi Gov. Haley Barbour isn’t quite ready to announce whether or not he will seek the Republican nomination for president in 2012. But, if he does, Iowans can expect to hear more of what he describes as “plain-spoken common sense and truth-telling.”

Barbour told a group of Johnson County Republicans gathered for a spaghetti supper at Clear Creek Amana High School that he expects to make his decision regarding the 2012 presidential process by the end of April, and asked those who have not committed to “keep your power dry” so that he could have a chance to compete for their support. In addition, Barbour said he believes Iowa’s influence will extend well beyond the first-in-the nation caucuses. The state’s six electoral votes, he said, will be pivotal for the 2012 general election and could be the difference between electing a Republican to the White House or four more years of the Obama administration.

“[That's] four more years that I don’t think our country can stand,” he said.

Throughout Barbour’s brief remarks he roundly criticized the Obama administration, focusing heavily on the economy and somewhat on foreign policy. There was no mention of any of the other GOP politicians who are also considering a run for the White House.

“When we had the election in 2008, everybody thought ‘give hope a chance,’ meant a chance to focus on economic growth and job creation” said Barbour, reminding the audience of Barack Obama‘s messaging that began in Iowa. Ultimately, he added, the priorities of the Obama administration have not reflected American’s perceptions of that message.

While Barbour’s words received nods of support from Republicans gathered in Tiffin, he remains a potential candidate who is relatively unknown to traditional caucus-goers. For instance, in marketing materials for the event circulated by the Johnson County Republicans, the keynote speaker was listed as “Mississippi Gov. Haley Barber.”

Traitors, spreading anti American rhetoric, antagonizing our commander in chief, and betraying US service members, are a disgrace.

Actually, questioning one’s government has long been acknowledged as one of the key values of American patriotism, despite efforts to paint it as otherwise. I don’t find myself believing that Barbour is the answer, however.

Spreading anti American sentiment is a cowedly act.

Your friend Barack Obama helped that dipshit out in Libya tonight… Yeah I just wrote that.

Am I supposed to be intimidated ?

But voicing dissension with the majority or with the ruling powers is not cowardly. It may be foolish, and thanks to charming bits of legislation like the Patriot Act may put one’s way of life at risk; however, it is not cowardly. Nor is anti-war equivalent to anti-American or anti-troop sentiment; if anything, I think expressing a wish for America to justify its actions before committing acts of war against another nation is pro-American, because it holds our nation to a higher standard. And if it keeps our troops from becoming embroiled in yet another drawn out conflict, from which many will not recover, it’s pro-troops too.

(Note: I doubt very much that Barbour is remotely interested in taking a sensible approach to conflict; I think he’s just targeting Obama. But I’ll still argue that he has the right to object to acts of military aggression.)

Will the Tea Party be attacking the Latinos at education town hall meetings
as well, or is it just seniors at health care town hall meetings you
            harass ?

          • Anonymous

Hm. You seem to have made an interesting but erroneous series of assumptions. First, I am in no way affiliated with the Tea Party; while their initial message of fiscal accountability seemed promising, they’ve been pretty thoroughly co-opted by social conservatives, who seem to wish to increase government interference in private lives.

Second, I’m not in the habit of harassing seniors, although I’ll certainly argue with them if they’re saying something really stupid. I’ll also defend their right to argue back.

Republican politicians suddenly debating the difference between war and a
military operation looks to me like a shallow attempt to discredit our
commander in chief for political gain. US service members operating in Libya
are directly effected by anti american rhetoric. Qaddafi doesn’t need any
        help from republican politicians.

mwade002 you have no concept of reality. What Gov Barbour said was neither anti tropps nor anti american. He was meerly saying what what is obvious to many people in this country. OBAMA does not know what he is doing and is clearly in over his head. He is putting this country in a no win situation and clearly does not know how to get out of it. By the way, it is the obama admin that will NOT admit that this is a war, not Gov Barbour. Get your facts straight. I do recall the Dem’s calling our troops killers and every other bad name after Iraq. You have no shame. Dont mind you spouting your ignorant statements but do not act righteous for a Dem’s party that might as well be flying the flag of the Soviet union!

Only the elimination of all conservative Christians will allow all Americans to be free and the world to no longer have to live in fear of the U.S.A.’s imperialist, terrorist holy war. The conservative ideology has never helped mankind in any way, it has not only never helped mankind in anyway, it has oppressed, murdered, raped and killed all those in it’s way to gain power. History shows us this. Fact shows us this. James Madison, the “Father of the U.S. Constitution”, along with many founders of this country, regardless of their religious or non-religious affiliations, knew keeping politics and religion separate not only preserves each, but helps them flourish: “The number, the industry, and the morality of the Priesthood and the devotion of the people have been manifestly increased by the total separation of the Church and the State.”
