Atheists formalize plans for national convention

Gathering scheduled to convene in Des Moines next month
By Lynda Waddington | 03.22.11 | 10:06 am

Plans for an upcoming national convention of atheists in Des Moines are being finalized, and central Iowans will soon see bright yellow billboards marketing the event.

As The Iowa Independent reported last summer, American Atheists announced their intention to “caucus in the heartland” when they set Des Moines as the site of their annual national convention. Organization officials indicated that their decision to bring the convention to Iowa was based on a wide variety of factors that included value, accessibility and interest.

“The major factor,” according to leader Ed Buckner, “was the rapidly growing activism and presence of atheist, freethought, secular and humanist groups throughout the region. We have been very impressed by this, and want to do all we can to help and to further energize these groups.”

In late March, the organization plans to unveil several billboards in the Des Moines metro area that proclaim “You KNOW there is NO GOD! We Know You’re Right!” and announce the April 21-24 dates for the convention.

A similar ad campaign on city buses during the summer of 2009 led to criticism by then-Gov. Chet Culver, heated public debate and, ultimately, a swell in the membership rolls of Iowa Atheists and Freethinkers, which sponsored the advertisements.

More recently, in December 2010, marketing for the Southeast Regional Atheist Meet in Alabama included a billboard depicting several houses of worship with the message “You KNOW they’re all SCAMS.”

“This is part of our ‘You KNOW it!’ campaign,” explained Dave Silverman, president of American Atheists. “As we did in New York, with [the Alabama] billboard we are challenging [people] to face what they know is the truth — that all religions are scams — they tell you have to live, and then then take your money, all in exchange for an afterlife that does not exist.”

Hector Avalos, a professor of religious studies at Iowa State University and former Pentecostal pastor and child evangelist, is one Hawkeye State notable on the list of scheduled speakers. Avalos also leads the ISU Atheist and Agnostic Society, which is one of several state-based groups that will play a prominent role throughout the event.

National voices scheduled to speak at the convention include former National Public Radio reporter Jamila Bey, screenwriter and journalist Matthew Chapman, atheist blogger Greta Christina, comedian Troy Conrad, Atheist Community of Austin President Matt Dillahunty, Missouri State University Church of the Flying Spaghetti Monster co-founder J.T. Eberhart, former Baptist deacon Donald Wright and theoretical physicist and lecturer Lawrence Krauss.

Although the group had initially reserved a block of rooms at the Embassy Suites on the River, where the convention will be held, that location has already sold out.

isnt telling people what to believe what they believe against?

    • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_TYW4U3RNFSSMASKUOYFFDMJM3Y Kenneth L

“You KNOW” is a statement that we are quite sure that you “already” know it’s a scam and a myth. It is not a command or even a suggestion of what to believe, but rather a challenge for you to admit what you know.
You KNOW 4+4 doesn’t equal 9… or even better, You KNOW there are no unicorns… so stop playing along with the delusion and admit it.

Hey IDK what anyone believes really, I just think being atheist or religious should be less confrontational. Telling someone that they know their religion is wrong is just telling them that YOU think it is wrong. Cant everyone be right? as long as they don’t hurt anyone else, I say let them all be right.

Yeah, I see how they’re trying to appeal to the people who feel isolated in their atheism, but it’s just as crass when atheists take this tack of knowing “the truth” as when the religious do it. We don’t know. Even if we saw and touched a God, we’d still only have our senses to rely on, and we’d never be certain. OK, we may be certain that an awful lot of the bible seems more likely than not to be fiction and propaganda….but we don’t know that something doesn’t exist just because we aren’t aware of it.

I’m tempted to attend this…FSM FTW!

People also used to believe the world was flat. Would you say then that let everyone be right?

          • Anonymous

I would say, if it makes ‘em happy and they aren’t sailing any ships, sure. Just don’t let ‘em teach it in science classes.

        • Anonymous

No, mutually exclusive claims cannot all be right. Somebody actually is wrong, and I would say it is important to know which side of the debate is right.

No one is telling theists their religion is wrong. If the sign said “You KNOW you are BALD. You need our hair product.”, you would not think the sign is trying to convince people with hair to use this hair product.

The sign is not targeting theists.

of course not. We don’t believe in God! We don’t believe in not telling people about it.

  • Anonymous

A sentence starting with “You know . . .” is stating what someone believes “you” believe. Nothing more. It is not a command to do anything. Nothing hypocritical here.

Nevertheless I think they have a very solid point..

*sigh* Why are there no groups for the apathetic agnostics? We don’t know, and really, we kinda don’t care.

To have freedom of religion you must have freedom from religion

They are not there to proselytize to anyone. People act like they are going to blanket DSM with blank pamphlets!

    • Anonymous

Actually, I kinda love that idea. “Open this pamphlet to read the detailed truth that we can factually support to answer every spiritual or philosophical question you’ve ever had!!!!!”

And then the inside is blank. Yeah, if the apathetic agnostics ever start to care, we are totally stealing that concept. Maybe. Or, you know, watching some reruns. Hard to say.

We’re going to have a great convention, probably our biggest and best ever, thanks to the many Iowa activists supporting us and to the leadership of Dave Silverman. Enjoy the provocative billboards and join us in Des Moines 21-24 April (held the weekend that most Christians go gaga over the festival of the fertility goddess Estre, don’t you know?) Regards to all, Ed B.
