Santorum in Iowa: ‘Obamacare’ makes government like a drug dealer

By Jason Hancock | 03.08.11 | 11:43 am

Democrats’ push to expand entitlement programs is just an attempt to get Americans hooked on federal spending just “like a drug dealer,” former U.S. Sen. Rick Santorum said Monday night at the annual Iowa Faith & Freedom Coalition fundraiser.

Santorum, who is widely expected to seek the Republican presidential nomination, said Democrats pushed hard for the passage of federal health care reform because they believe “Americans love entitlements, and once we get you hooked on an entitlement, you’ll never let it go.”

“Sounds like nothing more than trying to hook someone like a drug dealer,” he said. “Isn’t that what entitlements do? Make you dependent. Make you feel less. Make you want less. What we’re doing to this generation of America, this entitlement attitude, if that is not a moral issue, I don’t know what is.”

Many politicians and conservative activists have pointed at the Affordable Care Act as a socialization of America’s health care system, but in fact more people will get private health coverage thanks to the reforms. The law sets up “exchanges” where private insurers will compete to provide coverage to people who don’t have it. The law also gives tax credits to people who have difficulty affording insurance, an approach that relies on a free market, not socialized medicine.

The Pennsylvania Republican was joined at the IFFC event by other potential 2012 hopefuls: Herman Cain, Newt Gingrich, Tim Pawlenty and Buddy Roemer.

when you say ‘obamacare’ you sound like a 2nd grader, who in all fairness is probably more practical than anyone calling the wishy-washy healthcare bill ‘obamacare’. Grow up.

      ObamaCare = Neo Nazi Movement

      • http://qcblue.blogspot.com/ UIGrad2010

Oh dear where do I begin. His plan is Bob Dole’s plan essentially, it’s not even that progressive. Also, the nazis and neo-nazis are certainly not leftist. Read a book. I assume you think the health care bill is socialism. Well, I hate to break it to you, but nazism is a form of fascism, which is the furthest on the political scale to the right you can get. The nazis imprisoned communists, socialists, and political opposition leaders, including union members. I also assume you don’t even know the difference between communism and socialism. You sound like a mentally deranged two year old when you use the word ‘obamacare’. You take part in a socialist society and always have. There is no total capitalist society or totally socialist society, there are what are called mixed economy states. Learn something. Read a book. Barack Obama is not a socialist, he isn’t even a liberal. He’s a centrist Democrat. Yeesh.

Well these liberals comments are nice but not one of them has to do with jobs. I will not be distracted by this originality.

          • http://qcblue.blogspot.com/ UIGrad2010

what jobs? the republican congresses and republican presidents sent them all overseas as I mentioned before. They killed manufacturing to help their big business friends and those business people sent the jobs to Mexico and China and India because they don’t have to pay as much in wages. Business and republicans don’t care about our jobs or our workers. They care about $$$. You are in denial. Read a textbook already. Read the bills if you’d like where they did this. It’s all available online.

I’m not finding any extra jobs here, that’s for sure.

Nor are you distracted by facts.

The mistake that UIGrad2010 has made is the assumption that you will engage in a discussion with comments that are, constructive, thoughtful, and relevant to the subject at hand. Unfortunately myself and other posters on this site are realizing this is not likely to occur.

Wendy, this is a discussion that starts with how we as a society take care our sick and elderly and ends with how morally bankrupt some self-proclaimed Moral People are. This is a discussion about the feckless nature of politicians in general and specifically, the intellectual dishonesty of these so called Serious Moral Conservative Leaders. The facts are that many policy positions that used to be held by republican “leaders” all of a sudden become entitlements, socialism, bankrupting our children’s future, etc. once a democrat in the white house agrees with them. It is sad that these same politicians weren’t concerned about our children’s future when the national debt has increased under every republican administration due to increases in defense spending, medicare, and medicaid without the offset in increased revenues. Specifically, Dubya was handed a budget surplus and country that was on track to almost eliminating the debt. Instead of acting like a responsible leader, he acted like an 18 year old who just got control of a trust fund. He Blew It! Not that he wasn’t enabled by our feeble minded representatives in both the house and senate. Anyway, I digress.

Someone says tries to edumacate you about the differences between different political and social systems.
Wendy the Parrot says SQUAWK “Where’s the jobs” SQUAWK.

Someone is critical of the language and words being used to marginalize the healthcare debate.
Wendy the Parrot says SQUAWK “Obamacare” SQUAWK

Again, you have no original nor fact based response to anything posted on this site. You’re a broken record and a bad one at that.

The simple truth is you make yourself irrelevant.

I pity you. What a horrible way to exist in this beautiful world.

Wendy, at one time your posts were Conservative but sort-of within the realm of believability. You’ve jumped the shark.

Sound advice. Hopefully, this is just a phase I need to work my way through.

Yeah. It took me a while to give up.

There’s a reason Santorum lost his seat in Pennsylvania, a state more conservative than Iowa. We’re starting to see why: his statements are too extreme.

But he’s helpful to the GOP during the primary because he’ll make the other right-wingers look moderate by comparison. That may fool some independents who aren’t paying attention.
