Iowa workers plan statehouse rally

By Lynda Waddington | 02.18.11 | 3:40 pm

The Iowa Federation of Labor, AFL-CIO doesn’t just want Iowans to stand up for the rights of Wisconsin workers, it wants them to stand up for workers right here at home, and is planning a Tuesday rally in Des Moines.

Wisconsin is not the only place where working families are under attack. Across this nation, the lives and livelihoods of working families are being attacked systematically by right wing fanatics bent on crippling or destroying the trade union movement in America.

Show your support for Wisconsin workers and all workers by standing with us at the Iowa State Capitol in Des Moines.

The “We Are One” rally is scheduled for Tuesday, Feb. 22, at 1 p.m. on the west steps of the Iowa Capitol.

The Iowa rally will come after days of protests in Madison, Wisc. by public employees and their supporters. Gov. Scott Walker has proposed a bill that would eliminate most collective bargaining rights for union members.

The rally also follows a discredited statement by a spokesman for Iowa Gov. Terry Branstad that falsely portrayed public workers as earning far more than their private sector counterparts. The statement was offered as justification of why Branstad plans to draw both his state salary and state pension while serving as governor.

One of Branstad’s first acts upon being sworn in as governor for a fifth term was to make good on a campaign promise to rescind former Gov. Chet Culver’s executive order that encouraged Project Labor Agreements (PLAs), which at least one taxpayer watchdog group says inevitably lead to lower project costs. Branstad’s strict position on PLAs — that no government entities should use them — has prompted a battle with Cedar Rapids officials (led by former Iowa House Speaker Ron Corbett), who had planned to use such an agreement in a $75 million convention complex project.

In addition, earlier this week, an Iowa House subcommittee passed a bill that would weaken the bargaining position of public employee unions in the Hawkeye State.

The Iowa Federation of Labor represents more than 50,000 members of 520 unions throughout Iowa.

Terry? How is the plan working for Govener Walker? Just curious? Let me know how it is workin out for ya’all. Karl too.
    This from Think Progress:

Koch owns a coal company subsidiary with facilities in Green Bay, Manitowoc, Ashland and Sheboygan; six timber plants throughout the state; and a large network of pipelines in Wisconsin. While Koch controls much of the infrastructure in the state, they have laid off workers to boost profits. At a time when Koch Industries owners David and Charles Koch awarded themselves an extra $11 billion of income from the company, Koch slashed jobs at their Green Bay plant:

Officials at Georgia-Pacific said the company is laying off 158 workers at its Day Street plant because out-of-date equipment at the facility is being replaced with newer, more-efficient equipment. The company said much of the new, papermaking equipment will be automated. [...] Malach tells FOX 11 that the layoffs are not because of a drop in demand. In fact, Malach said demand is high for the bath tissue and napkins manufactured at the plant.

You really have to wonder how long it will take for Tea Party devotees to realize just how badly they are being used.

If labor unions are “so concerned” about their members why don’t they spend money to re-train the laid-off workers instead of funding these rallies?

Labor unions do not innovate. If they were innovative, labor unions would fund programs at community colleges to re-train workers for the skills that the market demands. For example, who is going to maintain the automated machines that are replacing workers at Georgia-Pacific? These planned labor union rallies are reminiscent of the days of the teamsters and Jimmy Hoffa. It worked back then but it won’t work today because of the United States’ massive government deficit in a global economy.

        Wendy,
First problem, you think the solution is re-training workers, for what jobs? Why do we want to put more people in debt with student loans? Do you want more people to be in financial difficulty so the plutocracy can swoop in and buy the hard earned assets for 10 cents on the dollar when they go into foreclosure?
Solution, tax breaks to companies for on the job training and potential full time work in lower skilled work.
Automated equipment lets go to that for a moment, my work in life has been technology and I hold patents on the topic. I am all for technology, but what I don’t like is the companies that use the hard work and intelligent people of my state to build and debug these systems and as soon as they are proven, lay off everyone, pack it all up and ship it to another country leaving those who put their hearts and souls into it left unemployed and struggling to survive.
Solution, quality is typical driver for automation, business should invest more in technology that mistakes proofs human work, and aids the human worker in being more efficient, more work for all the people who need it and let the robots starve, for some reason I don’t think they will.
Educating people cost HUGE money, or are you single and self employed with no children. I have five children, three of which have degrees and one with a masters, none of them are making comparable wages I made at their age working at a factory while I went to school on the side. One of them is a research scientist and I would be ashamed if I paid someone that little for the highly technological work done. Shall we get into the costs of this effort to improve my children’s prospects? DO NOT GO THEIR, education is NOT a good investment. Or is it a guarantee of employment in these times, only guarantees DEBT.
Unions, no I am not an advocate in much of what unions do, but where I get angry is the manipulation of the plutocrats controlled by the plutocracy to justify what they are doing in the name of a budget. We are witnessing a world where the big businesses have sucked everything from d##n near everybody and North Africa today is the result. I just don’t want my country and my state to end up like the mid east today.

The Hoffa thing not sure where your going with that, must be listening to Glen Beck or something?
