A new Gallup poll shows that Americans support extending federal unemployment benefits by a nearly 3-1 margin.
When asked what priorities they felt were most important for Congress to achieve during the lame duck session, 48 percent said extending unemployment benefits was very important and 28 percent said it was somewhat important. Only 24 percent said it was not important to them.
Unless Congress acts by Nov. 30, an estimated 2 million people slated to receive extended benefits will not get them on time, if ever.
Nearly 44,000 Iowans will see an immediate reduction in benefits, with 1,500 Iowans per week losing their benefits starting Dec. 1.
Congress is taking this week off for a Thanksgiving recess, reconvening on Nov. 29. The federal government has never in history failed to extend additional unemployment benefits with the jobless rate over 7.2 percent. The current rate is 9.6 percent.
