Perhaps after reading the Iowa Independent’s report on the Hawkeye State’s battleground status, an Iowan saw an opportunity to make a buck.

The Iowa Secretary of State’s Office was contacted Thursday about an eBay listing that had up for bid the general election vote of the Iowan who made the auction post.

“We will not tolerate anyone tampering with our elections,” Michael Mauro, Iowa Secretary of State, said in a prepared statement this morning. “This person removed the posting and it appears as though it may have been a prank. However, let this be a warning to others that this state takes the handling of our elections seriously and will not let the voting process be jeopardized.”

According to investigations within the Secretary of State’s Office, the listing originated from the Sioux City area. The matter has been turned over to the Iowa Attorney General’s Office for further review.

Under Iowa law, exchanging a vote for anything of value is a felony that carries a maximum penalty of five years in prison and a $7,500 fine.
