As one of Gannett Company, Inc.’s largest worksites, The Des Moines Register, has mostly been spared from the most recent round of employee cuts — at least until Monday.
Publisher Laura Hollingsworth informed participants at a late afternoon staff meeting Monday, according to the Gannett Blog, that four employees had been laid off, and continued the now well-rehearsed company line about the weak economy, lowered advertising revenues and more possible future changes.
A reader told the Gannett Blog that although Hollingsworth was asked about furloughs, the publisher said she wasn’t sure at this time.
It is estimated that Gannett has cut roughly 200 jobs, excluding the 130 that USA Today announced in August. In addition, an estimated five papers are imposing pay cuts to stave off additional layoffs.
It is not yet known what department the four Des Moines employees serviced.
