Republican U.S. Sen. Chuck Grassley ran away with his re-election bid Tuesday night, securing a strong win over Democratic challenger Roxanne Conlin.
Several major media outlets called the race almost immediately. Grassley led in the polls throughout the campaign, seeing 30-point advantages as some points.
Conlin, a trial lawyer, spent her campaign attacking Grassley on his health care and the economy. However, the incumbent’s message of “Grassley Works” appears to have resonated most with voters.
Toward the end of the campaign, liberal groups pumped money into the campaign with T.V. ads against the Republican senator. On Oct. 26, The Iowa Independent reported the Progressive Change Campaign Committee and Democracy for America purchased more than 100 cable spots.
Grassley has held his Senate seat since 1981.
