Jesse Zwick, of our sister site The Washington Independent, takes a look behind the scenes and investigates the role of the American Legislative Exchange Council (ALEC), a conservative 501(c)3 nonprofit that brings together state legislators and representatives of major industries to craft “model legislation.”

ALEC’s model “Freedom of Choice in Health Care Act” has been introduced in 38 states and enacted in six — which raises the question of how, exactly, the group has managed to wield so much power without attracting much notice.

The story begins with a single doctor in Arizona, and expands to include the most powerful players in the pharmaceutical industry. Give it a read here.
