Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney today responded to a widely circulated Iowa Independent Story on the former Massachusetts governor’s 1994 calls for cuts to farm subsidies and “virtual" elimination of the U.S. Department of Agriculture.
“Governor Romney believes that investing in agriculture is key to our economy and families. America’s farmers not only provide food for the dinner table, but they will play a critical role in lessening our reliance on foreign sources of oil,” Tim Albrecht, Romney for President Iowa campaign spokesman, said today. “Governor Romney is strongly committed to family farmers across this nation and is optimistic for the role the agriculture community will play in providing alternative and renewable sources of energy.”
As Romney’s campaign was responding to the story, Michigan Citizens For Tax Reform sent out a news release citing the Iowa Independent article and calling on Romney to “reaffirm his principled opposition to farm subsidies and the Department of Agriculture.”
“While Governor Romney has recently changed his position on a variety of issues, we are hopeful that in this case he will stand firm in support of reducing the size of government,” said former State Rep. Matt Milosch of Michigan Citizens For Tax Reform. “I’m pleased that Governor Romney took this aggressive position in his last campaign and am hopeful that he will maintain his commitment to eliminating the Department of Agriculture.”
