Wednesday was a difficult day for The American Independent News Network, which is the larger entity that operates The Iowa Independent. Our chief executive and founder announced two of our sister sites would close and their content would be moved to The American Independent.
A recently introduced bill could have far-reaching impact on the U.S. sugar industry, including American Crystal Sugar, a farmer-owned cooperative that locked out 1,300 Midwest workers on Aug. 1.
The chairman for Herman Cain’s Iowa effort says the campaign “relied more on the word of farmers than Washington regulators” in deciding to run an ad containing claims the Environmental Protection Agency says are false.

Several campaigns launched television ads this week, with the latest coming Thursday from U.S. Rep. Leonard Boswell. The ad, entitled “Personal Responsibility,” compares 3rd District Republican challenger Brad Zaun‘s calls for a return to personal responsibility with reports of Zaun’s personal history of past-due bills, threats of foreclosure and a federal lien for unpaid taxes.
The ad comes after the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee released its own TV ad smacking Zaun for statements he made about flood recovery. Zaun’s campaign has criticized both ads.
Also up on the air this week is U.S. Rep. Tom Latham, whose ad is focused on the Ames Republican’s fiscal record, specifically, votes against bailouts, the federal stimulus and health care reform. Latham never mentions his Democratic opponent this November, Bill Maske.
And U.S. Sen. Chuck Grassley is back with two new ads (his fifth and sixth of the fall campaign ), both touting his efforts to bring business to the state. Grassley faces off with Democrat Roxanne Conlin this fall.
