The Des Moines Register is quoting White House officials saying President Barack Obama will return to Iowa on Sept. 29.
The president will apparently be in Des Moines to discuss the economy and its effect on middle-class families, although no details are currently available. There are thus far no political stops on the president’s Iowa schedule.
This would be Obama’s third trip to the Hawkeye State this year. Following passage of historic health care reform legislation in March, Obama visited Iowa City, where during the 2008 Iowa Caucuses he unveiled his plan to overhaul the nation’s health care system.
In April, Obama toured the southeastern part of the state to discuss the economy.
Iowa already has strong ties to the Obama administration. The Iowa Caucuses launched Obama’s presidential campaign, and former Iowa Gov. Tom Vilsack has a seat in Obama’s cabinet. David Axelrod, Obama’s chief campaign adviser, expressed their fondness for Iowa during a campaign stop shortly before the general election, calling the Hawkeye State “hallowed ground.” Both Axelrod and another Obama adviser, David Ploufe, were in Indianola Sunday for the annual Harkin Steak Fry.
Vice President Joe Biden campaigned for Iowa Democrats in Cedar Rapids in May.
