Both major party candidates in Iowa’s 2nd District have agreed to a televised debate on Oct. 12.
The debate, which will be hosted by The Gazette and KCRG-TV, will be held from 7 to 8 p.m. in the television station’s downtown studios and broadcast on digital channel 9.2.
“The campaign of Democratic [U.S.] Rep. Dave Loebsack confirmed yesterday that he’ll be there. Republican challenger Mariannette Miller-Meeks’ campaign accepted our offer some time ago,” wrote Gazette editor Lyle Muller, who added that he is in the process of re-confirming the date with the Miller-Meeks campaign.
There is little doubt that the date will stand. Since first agreeing to the debate, Miller-Meeks has been pushing Loebsack to do the same in numerous press releases.
The Gazette and KCRG will also host a gubernatorial debate on Oct. 7 between Democratic incumbent Chet Culver and Republican challenger Terry Branstad. According to Muller, the news outlet is waiting to hear from the campaign of U.S. Sen. Chuck Grassley about an Oct. 10 invitation to debate Democratic challenger Roxanne Conlin, who has already accepted the opportunity.
