Branstad maintains double digit lead in latest poll

By Patrick Caldwell | 08.09.10 | 1:30 pm

GOP gubernatorial candidate Terry Branstad maintains a dominant lead over Democratic incumbent Gov. Chet Culver in the lastest Rasmussen poll. Branstad leads Culver 52-36 percent, with a +/- 4.5 percent margin of error in the poll.

The results show a positive gain for Culver since the last Rasmussen poll, in which Branstad led by 26 percent. But that survey came immediately after Branstad won the Republican primary, which likely boosted his results. The new numbers are nearly identical to pre-primary polls, so Branstad’s drop looks to be a return to the general pattern rather than a true positive movement for Culver.

Since the conclusion of the primary election at the beginning of June, the two candidates have gone traded increasingly-negative ads. Even after running numerous ads attacking Branstad’s tenure as governor, Culver still can’t bring Branstad’s approval ratings below 50 percent support. Branstad only receives an unfavorable rating of 40 percent in the poll, compared to 60 percent who disapprove of Culver’s campaign.
