Outlawing gay marriage will improve the economy, activist says

By Laura Millsaps | 08.02.10 | 7:43 am

There are taxpayer costs associated with the breakdown of the family, so overturning legalized same-sex marriage would go a long way to improve the nation’s sagging economy, according to Tamara Scott, one of several speakers at the National Organization for Marriage (NOM) rally at the state Capitol in Des Moines Sunday afternoon.

A young protester listens to speakers at the National Organization for Marriage rally at the state Capitol in Des Moines Sunday (photo by Laura Millsaps/The Iowa Independent).

NOM, a New Jersey-based anti-gay marriage organization, announced last year that it would launch a new initiative called The Reclaim Iowa Project, with the goal of getting a constitutional amendment before Iowa voters reversing the unanimous ruling of the Iowa Supreme Court that the state’s Defense of Marriage Act was unconstitutional. Sunday’s rally was part of a nationwide tour of 22 cities designed to build public opposition to same-sex marriage.

Scott, the state director for Concerned Women for America, told the crowd of more than 100 that part of the country’s current economic downturn was to blame on the social costs of the threatened traditional family unit through the legalization of gay marriage.

“It costs you, the taxpayer, as high as $280 billion a year for fragmented families, according to the Family Research Council,” Scott told the crowd, citing a study from the D.C.-based Christian political association from May 2009.

“If we would correct the breakdown of the family by 1 percent, we could save the taxpayer $3 billion a year,” she said. “An easy fix and a better fix long term for our children… When the family is healthy, the community benefits. When the family is hurting, society will pay the cost one way or another. We can fix this economic downturn very easily by fixing some hearts.”

Scott called on the crowd to speak up as neighbors and as community members, saying they had bigger impact at the ground level.

“To sit back and do nothing, you become part of the problem,” she said. “We all need to help out. It’s too big for any of us. There’s plenty of evil to go around.”

Scott’s statements are contradicted at least in part by a 2008 study by the Williams Institute at the UCLA School of Law, which estimated that same-sex weddings and related tourism would bring $160 million to the state of Iowa through 2011, and an extra $5.3 million per year in tax revenue.

The FRC’s studies have also been routinely criticized by media and academia for questionable methodology and politicized conclusions.

Former state Rep. Danny Carroll, who serves as chairman of the Iowa Family Policy Center’s political action committee, opened the rally by asking attendees if they had been consulted on the legalization of same-sex marriage.

“Were you ever being invited to a public hearing as that policy was being deliberated? Did you see any editorial or opinions in the news media as that policy was being deliberated?” Carroll asked. “We had a major shift in policy on marriage and you had no input whatsoever, you simply woke up one morning, and you were told, this is the way it’s going to be. This fall in November, the people will have a chance to be heard.”

Several Republican officeholders and political hopefuls were also in attendance, including Dave Leach, who is running for state Senate District 31 in Des Moines against Democratic incumbent Matt McCoy. Leach was circulating the rally handing out fliers, but stopped to tell The Iowa Independent, “I am running against Iowa’s chief sodomite.” McCoy is the first openly gay member of Iowa’s General Assembly.

Also in the crowd was Jonathan Narcisse, who was collecting the signatures he needs in order to appear as an independent candidate for governor on the November ballot.

“There’s no question, regardless of where you are in this issue, that the (Iowa Supreme Court) judges clearly usurped their authority, and that’s not how our society functions,” he said. “I absolutely believe that marriage is between a man and a woman, and that Iowans ought to have a right to vote on that.”

On the other side of downtown at Western Gateway Park, a pro-gay marriage rally was organized by One Iowa, the state’s largest LGBT-rights organizations. Iowa House Speaker Pat Murphy and Iowa First Lady Mari Culver headlined the event.

In an interview, Culver told The Iowa Independent she was speaking on behalf of herself at the event, not her husband, who is running for re-election this fall.

“I’m a lawyer by trade,” she said. “We are a country and state of laws. The court has ruled and I think we need to accept this.”

When asked about Scott’s assertion that upholding the “traditional family” unit translated to a more stable economy, Culver disagreed.

“Heterosexuals have not done a great job with marriage and the family,” she said, pointing to statistics that half of all marriages fail. “I think a strong middle class makes a strong economy. I think (NOM) is looking for some economic cover, rather than revealing that some in their group are simply anti-gay.”

Murphy, a Democrat from Dubuque, reiterated to the crowd his promise that as long as Democrats are in charge of the legislature, a vote on same-sex marriage will never take place.

“There should be no discrimination in this state’s constitution,” he said. “If you elect us and keep us with you, we will continue that right for at least two more years and more like four years or six years.”

Here we go again! Those opposed to gays are using headline news to incite yet another round of disinformation. The economy bad, its the gays fault! I can only hope that the people of Iowa are not simple mind folk and see through this new propaganda campeign!

This is nothing but LIES, PROPAGANDA and Spewing of HATE. This is not the truth and FRC is a bogus organization created just to “back” their propaganda and hate rhetoric. They are so far out of reality. This is no better than the propaganda that Hitler and his followers used to justify the killing of the Jews. Be careful people, if they get their way they will not stop at the LGBT community.

NOM and Tamara Scott have yet to produce any evidence that legalized same-sex marriage contributes to the “breakdown of the family”, or that families are breaking down, for that matter. Rather, NOM's ethics have broken down. But that's their fault.

Why aren't these alleged 'christians' working to outlaw swine farming in Iowa? Didn't their invisible friend prohibit that, too? I don't hear 'em complaining about GMO corn, either…..talk about messing with 'god's' plan! Oh, also wondering why so many women of child-bearing age were there….after all, a substantial percentage of them are unclean at any given time so thus shouldn't be out among the rest of us.

Marriage equality has nothing to do with your heterosexual marriages falling apart.

Heterosexuals need to man up and take responsibility for their own poor choices and bad behavior.

The opponents of equal rights for America's gay citizens will go down in history alongside the supporters of bigots like George Wallace and Lester Maddox.

  • bill4321

Tamara Scott's Concerned Women for America group also spoke out again Chelsea Clinton's interfaith marriage last week, condemning the fact that she was marrying a Jewish man. Straight people should wake up- if these fundamentalist groups have their way, banning same-sex marriage is only the first step. Your marriage could very well be next.

The concern women of america are on the hate group internal watchlist of the Southern Poverty Law center. The group that still has work to do crushing the KKK remnants, eg the people who did the vicious dragging death of James Byrd, a black man, in TX some years ago.

And the founder of NOM is Maggie Gallagher. Who is the mother of an out of wedlock child. Who when she shows up at NOM rallies, her husband is conspicuous by his absence.

And Brian Brown – my gay friends say that one look at him, and he is just a secret homo, who hates himself, and throws out his hatred on others in a desperate attempt to hide his true nature. The gay friends are helping me to understand how you can identify the secretly gay – its called Gaydar, or gay radar. Its fascinating to begin to understand gaydar. EG yesterday in DC, the metro had a big delay. And my wife and I got to talking to a pleasant 30 yr old man. And afterwards I was able to point out 3 things about him that said gay gay gay. And it doesn't matter at all, he's entitled to the same “equal justice under law” and “with liberty and justice for all” upon which this nation is supposedly based, but still has a long way to go.

Hmm…Limiting a group of people in their participation in society improves the economy. How? Once again, these groups should be more focused on reducing divorce and uniting families then trying to break apart a group which they don't wish to accept.

  • soundboyjeff

I'm confused… how do two same-sex people getting married cause the breakdown of a heterosexual marriage?

are these heterosexuals questioning their sexuality? do they decide to divorce because John has finally decided to marry Joe?

If that's the case… why have divorce rates been steadily rising for DECADES while only a few states allow gay marriage? and only in the last couple YEARS.

sorry NOM, there are TONS of reasons marriages break up… gay people wanting to get married isn't one of them.

essentially, this arguement is based on their definition of a 'family'… while a lot of these fundies might stick their fingers in their ears and yell “la la la la la” when the subject is broached, gay people have families as well.

bottom line? hetero or homo, DIVORCE is responsible for the breakdown of the family… why not fight for laws banning divorce? A ballot measure is coming up in California to do just that, want to bet it gets very few votes? Hipocrisy, thy name is the religious right.

That's a great argument, other than the fact that it's fundamentally wrong. In Massachusetts, the only state where gay marriage has been around long enough to study, divorce rates have declined there, rather than increased. This is more NOM BS, stated with no statistics or research to back it up. California is running a campaign to outlaw divorce — why doesn't NOM get behind that, which would likely results in greater than 1% of the couples staying together?

There is zero evidence to support the anti-gay claims of NOM that the “current economic downturn” can be blamed on “the social costs of the threatened traditional family unit through the legalization of gay marriage.”

I agree that broken families costs tax payers money but I don't get what do gay families have to do with broken families and how would forcefully breaking their family with the law help fix broken families.

Then again their predecessors in the past or their equivalents from my country of origin would like my heterosexual relationship with a person of a different race hurts the economy by saying something and somehow saying that I cause it.

    • http://twitter.com/iammercymedical Kara Walker

Well, it's not like Mrs. Scott was very specific whatsoever in her statements. She makes a bunch of bold statements, but backs them up with zero references. Her statements are extremely vague, mostly because there is no connection to make.

      Lets ask some questions.

      1) Why do “fragmented families” cost taxpayers anything?
      2) What exactly does she mean by “fragmented families” or the “breakdown of the family”
      3) What do any of these things have to do with gay marriage?

It's honestly amazing that such vague, blanket statements can be made with such thin (and seemingly invisible) ties to gay marriage as if that is to blame and people still continue to go along with it. It's just further proof that people want to believe what they want to believe. You can throw all the facts in the world at them, and they'll still believe what they want to believe as long as it supports their ignorance.

These people have no facts to back up their lies. The ground is crumbling beneath their feet and they know it. They grasp for more and more straws day by day because they know they're losing (and will ultimately lose) the battle. Equality will greet us all with open arms one day and the world will be a better place for it.

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_2VVHGFY6INZQ5SX4HLNUF4NSIE Stanley J

Just another bald faced lie from the bigots of the earth.

As one of my neighbors said – “we need to help gay people stabilize their relationships. And what better way to do that then to get them into legal relationships where “breaking up is hard to do”. And let them be an example to all the str8s who are divorcing, leaving children who deserve two parents with only one .

NOM and its leaders are following the old playbook of someone who said “if you tell a lie often enough and outrageous enough, it will be seen as the truth”
He got Hitler elected in `1933, and the result was WWII, and the holocaust of 6 million Jews, tens of thousands of germany's gays, etc. His name was Gobbels, and the only thing he did for humanity was 15 years too late – he committed suicide on May 3 1945, as the russians were breaking through into berlin.

And expect NOM to come up with even more outrageous statements. Their pals the FRC called for jailing all gays – meaning in an Auschwitz. And they are supporting the Genocide of GAys bill in Uganda.

And lets remember the old south – their “let the people vote” resulted in slavery, the KKK'rs, and segregation.

While the world moves on. IN the last 7 weeks ARgentina, Portugal, and Iceland approved marriage equality for gay people. And Ireland approved civil unions with all the rights of marriage.

Joining almost every western European nation except Italy and greece (reason obvious), much of Latin America – Argentina, Columbia, Equador, Uruguay, Brazil, and parts of Mexico and Brazil in recognizing gay couples legal unions.

And other diverse nations such as chech republic, austria, hungary, Israel, repub of south africa, Australia, and New Zealand. And a beginning in Japan.

NOM is the last gasp of just another outrageous bigotry perpetrated in direct contravention of Jesus second of only two commandments – to love thy neighbor as thyself.

And the results show – typically the supporters of equality for gay people have outnumbered the NOM group by 5 – 10 to 1 at NOM “rallies”. There was one picture of thousands of people at a “NOM rally”. Turns out the picture was a photoshop of the NOM people over a picture from a world cup soccer match.

Here in Annapolis, MD only 20 people showed up at a NOM rally. The world is begtinning to understand that equal treatment under the law for our gay citizens is the social justice issue of our time

“It costs you, the taxpayer, as high as $280 billion a year for fragmented families, according to the Family Research Council…”

Since 99.9% of marriages are heterosexual unions, the FRC and Tamara Scott just made a very good legal argument to ban opposite-sex marriage. Well done, homophobes! — Now if we could just get Tamara to explain how this statistic has ANY bearing on same-sex couples, that would be enlightening. Most married same-sex couples don't have children; and those who do, usually adopt abandoned children from heterosexual families. So virtually NONE of the same-sex families are fragmented are they?

  • perfectedlove

The breakdown of families especially during the last 50 years we call the free sex culture is part of the same basket as same sex marriage. A lot of people do not know what it is to be raised by a father and a mother in a healthy committed relationship. They are hurting, broken, lonely and angry. No fault divorce laws did not help. Feminism carries a lot of baggages to the point that young people reject the other sex. Same sex marriage is anothe nail in the coffin of this culture of death.

    • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_H5ZFWC4TNKNG66IM6A53MEYXEE Kate

When you say “healthy committed relationship”, are you for divorce if the parents are not in one? If, say, the father is emotionally, verbally, or physically abusive to either the mother or the children? Homosexuals can't be responsible for the failing of those marriages, can they? They are not responsible for the rising divorce rate among straight couples.

I was raised by a single mother, and have a happy, healthy life. I feel extremely loved and blessed to have her in my life. I am sane, I am happy, I am healthy, I am successful. The only time I feel angry is when I see ignorant comments that paint all non-traditional families with the same brush. We are all different, and all mothers and fathers are different. It is the people in the situation that matter, not the situation itself. And, like it or not, there are just as many loving, caring parents in the homosexual community as there are in the heterosexual community.

It is more important to be loved. I would have much rather been raised by my loving mother than to be raised by some of the forced relationships I've seen in my friends' homes – all for the sake of the children.

    • 1whothinks

Oooh, that evil feminism, bringing attention and support to rape and incest victims of either sex, parity in work pay, accomodations for child-rearing in the work place, yep, that sure would turn a red-blooded American boy or girl to the other team. And two people of the same sex couldn't possibly have a “healthy committed relationship” now, could they? Pity you see equality as a “culture of death”, you are no doubt one hot hunk of burning perfectedlove – ha

Lol! They actually just made a case to ban straight marriages. Gay marriage would help stimulate the economy, considering how much money would be used and taxed for the services. Nom has run out of ideas to condone their bigotry.

To those of you using the Bible as a weapon against homosexuality, you are wrong. Homosexuality is not a sin. The Bible is constantly being taken out of context to support anti-gay views. Scholars who have studied the Bible in context of the times and in relation to other passages have shown those passages (Leviticus, Corinthians, Romans, etc) have nothing to do with homosexuality. These passages often cherry-picked while ignoring the rest of the Bible. The sins theses passages are referring to are idolatry, Greek temple sex worship, prostitution, pederasty with teen boys, and rape, not homosexuality or two loving consenting adults.

    http://www.gaychristian101.com/

Thats why Jesus never mentions it as well. There is nothing immoral, wrong, or sinful about being gay. Jesus, however, clearly states he HATES hypocrisy. If you preach goodness, then promote hate and twist the words of the Bible, you are a hypocrite, and will be judged and sent to hell. Homosexuals will not go to hell, hypocrites will.

  • shadow_man

For those of you claiming homosexuality is a “lifestyle”, that is a false and ignorant statement. Homosexuality is not a choice. Just like you don't choose the color of your skin, you cannot choose whom you are sexually attracted to. If you can, sorry, but you are not heterosexual, you are bi-sexual. Virtually all major psychological and medical experts agree that sexual orientation is NOT a choice. Most gay people will tell you its not a choice. Common sense will tell you its not a choice. While science is relatively new to studying homosexuality, studies tend to indicate that its biological.

There is overwhelming scientific evidence that homosexuality is not a choice. Sexual orientation is generally a biological trait that is determined pre-natally, although there is no one certain thing that explains all of the cases. “Nurture” may have some effect, but for the most part it is biological.

And it should also be noted that:
“It is worth noting that many medical and scientific organizations do believe it is impossible to change a person's sexual orientation and this is displayed in a statement by American Academy of Pediatrics, American Counseling Association, American Association of School Administrators, American Federation of Teachers, American Psychiatric Association, American Psychological Association, American School Health Association, Interfaith Alliance Foundation, National Association of School Psychologists, National Association of Social Workers, and National Education Association.”

  • shadow_man

The National Library of Medicine pubs confirm that sexual orientation is natural, biologically induced in the first trimester of pregnancy, morally neutral, immutable, neither contagious nor learned, bearing no relation to an individuals ability to form deep and lasting relationships, to parent children, to work or to contribute to society.

From the American Psychological Association: homosexuality is normal; homosexual relationships are normal.

The American Academy of Pediatrics, American Psychological Asociation and American Psychiatric Asociation have endorsed civil marriage for same-sex couples because marriage strengthens mental and physical health and longevity of couples, and provides greater legal and financial security for children, parents and seniors.

America's premier child/mental health associations endorse marriage equality.

    http://www.boston.com/news/local/massachusetts/…

I discussed this at length here: LGBTQ Community Divided, Not United, by Obama’s Speech to the HRC, how we do need to prove that it’s good for society (and the economy) instead of just reiterating that it won’t hurt anyone, because that’s how to run an effective campaign; we should go into the economic benefits, and how many foster kids are helped by gay families. Also we have an overpopulation problem so no one should be pushed to reproduce, that’s not what our planet needs right now. We do need to fight back and show how this helps people.

However, it’s unfortunate/appalling that we actually need to prove why equal rights for all people would better society. Ideologically, a culture of equality and tolerance inherently betters society … like, by definition

Now you see where it leads when you involve government in the religious ceremonioes and regulating them. Instead of the church controlling who gets married it's the government doing it. And they will now tell you that you MUST allow gay marriage. You need to get this through your heads now. SEPARATION of church and state was the Idea of Jesus. ” Render unto Caesar that which is Caesars and unto God that which is God's”
Making sins into crimes is against his teachings also.
“Let ye among thee who hath not sinned cast the first stone.”
and when the woman asked what her punishment should be, he said ” Go and sin no more”.

This is how Sharia teachings have also infiltrated our government, by the use of the Christian denominations to do their work for them. They get you used to having the government run by the religious zealots and then they have you.

    It's what you deserve.

My church is happy to marry same-sex couples. But the government will not allow it.

I can only assume that you support the church's right to decide who they will marry?

    • MetalNick

@ KenW Marriage is not an exclusively religious institution – it is a legal classification. Any place of worship can refuse to marry gays – it is their right to do so, but why refuse the legal right? Sure, you can be married in the “eyes of the Lord” but your marriage isn't legal if it isn't recognized by the state.

This nonsense is what gets some of you Christians riled up. No one is forcing any religion to allow gay marriages.

“Let ye among thee who hath not sinned cast the first stone.”

And I suppose judging and denying other's the right to their lives was a small asterisk that was just…. “misplaced” somewhere in a translation from the greek/hebrew to the KJV?

  • DeanAndersen

I am very proud of my home state of Iowa for standing up for civil rights and recognizing same sex marriage. Yeah Iowa!

  • billyfla

So now all the failures in straight marriages (and their associated costs) are the fault of marriage equality for gay people?! God, these people are stupid!

    • javila

No you r stupid. No one said anyone is at fault. Just that straight marriages do not last very long nowadays, so why judge gay marriage as a threat. It simply is not a threat to anyone, admit it u just hate gays.

      • billyfla

Javila, I don't hate gays, you might have figured that out by my reference to “Marriage EQUALITY for Gay People”. The punctuation after my first sentence (i.e. ? and !) express shock and incredulity (look it up) at the fact that the story is about straight people who blame the all-too-common failure of straight marriages on EQUALITY FOR GAY PEOPLE. Please explain how you can possibly construe (look it up) my comment as hating gay people!

      • billyfla

PS and go back and read the article, quote: Scott, the state director for Concerned Women for America, told the crowd of more than 100 that part of the country’s current economic downturn was to blame on the social costs of the threatened traditional family unit through the legalization of gay marriage.

So yes, someone IS BLAMING gays for additional costs due to gay equality.

Without out us they might actually admit the huge failure of prayer and take personal responsibility for their own miserable lives. Hitler liked Scape Goats as they are a powerful tool to rally the troops to a cause, we are being used and abused by these whacko's, they need to get a life.

Oh the bigotry that is humanity. Even if we were conditioned to be homosexual or naturally so, who really cares? You religious nuts and your nitpicking. Care about something that actually matters and has an impact on our planet. ( Or I guess we can condition homosexuals back to “normal” and pump more humans into the happy meal socioeconomic mess that is america )

really why should GAY exist at first to the extent that they can even publicize it?

    • http://www.facebook.com/people/John-Russell-Thomas/1513187208 John Russell Thomas

Because millions of gay Americans want to get married. Why does this bother you? Just because it's different? Well, change is part of life.

And how does SSM threaten anything in your life? It doesn't. You're a moral busybody obsessing over others' private lives. Find something else to freak out over, and buzz off.

    • http://www.facebook.com/Matt.the.Computer.Guy Matthew Breslin

Gay people exist because that's the way your god made them. Deal with it.

  • http://twitter.com/thomaruss rusty thomas

Like Laura Bush and many others have said, this is a “generational issue.” The only age cohort that opposes gay marriage is 65+. For all other age groups, there is support; and especially high support among those under 30. Just do the math. NOM and other anti-gay marriage groups can't win–they've had little success convincing the young to oppose SSM, and their biggest supporters, the elderly, are slowly dying off.

Isn't outlawing gay marriage causing even more breakdown of the family unit costing even more to the economy? Logic eludes these people.

  • kevin432

Is that a boy or a girl in the photo? Sort of ironic that I can't tell.

  • http://twitter.com/me1an1e Melanie

wait a minute, gay marriage is currently illgal in a vast majority of states and where it has been legalized is very recent – yet.. it's gay marriage that causes the fractured family and costs us money.. *head shake*

  • http://www.facebook.com/willfulacts Jonathan Curry

I honestly can't tell if this kid is a boy or girl…does that mean he or she can't get married?

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=506701372 Doug Sanger

If these people were serious about the breakdown of the family they would be rallying for a Constitutional Amendment to ban divorce. Not gay marriage. Gay marriage is just a convenient boogeyman because they know that if they intended to address the real cause of marriage breakdown, there wouldn't be anyone to attend the rallies and donate money to hateful politicians.

    • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_V3B4TOY3SPMRI5K7KYZ5IZLN3U Kathy H

Ban divorce? Oh,yeah – what a great idea! Let's just lock people in abusive marriages, where the man is beating the wife and kids to a pulp. Wonderful idea, moron!

      • shadow_man

Hey, but if you truly believe in traditional marriages and “protecting the institution of family”, and what the Bible says, then you should be advocating for outlawing divorce. And if you're worried about abusive marriages, seems like you have even more work then to fix straight marriages. Seems like the problems stem from your own selfs, not gay marriages.

Better yet would be to BAN ALL RELIGION if you really want to improve our nation and the economy…

Over 70 years of research on IQ and religiosity has shown a consistent pattern. IQ and religiosity are negatively correlated. No study to date has shown that religion enhances or improves intelligence, but almost all studies show that, on average, the higher the level of religiousity, the lower the IQ. This is not to say that all people who are religious are unintelligent, but that religion seems to suppress intelligence. IQ differences can be as much as 5 points or 1/2 of a standard deviation lower among highly religious groups. My own guess is that this difference is due to the inhibitions and suppression of curious and questioning behavior in religious followers. If questioning is prohibited from early childhood, it probably has a decided effect on development or critical thinking skills which are associated with higher intelligence.

With respect to mental health, the picture is even more interesting. Nationally, the more religious a region is the higher the incidence of sexual abuse and child abuse. The best predictor of child abuse in a home is alcohol use BUT the second best predictor is religiosity of the parents. Finally, the best predictor of divorce in the US is religiosity. The highest level of divorce is among Baptists and similar groups. George Barna, a admittedly evangelical researcher, has reported consistently that divorce is highest among Baptists and fundamentalist evangelical groups and that divorce occurs most often after one or both spouses are “saved.” He also found that agnostics and atheists have among the lowest divorce rates.

Yet another indicator might be the incidence of teen pregnancy which is positively related to religiosity. The least religious teens do not get pregnant as often and they also have a lower incidence of STD’s. Finally, all religious groups are represented in prison population about equal to their frequency in the general population with the big exception of atheists and the non-religious. This group is significantly under represented in the prison population.

If we agree that divorce, criminal behavior ,teen pregnancy and child abuse are proxy indicators of mental health, then “Houston we have a problem.” Religion is not associated with high levels of mental health. See the links below to various reports.

For a full discussion of these topics, see the book The God Virus, Chapter 8.

Just as moronic as banning Gay marriage to improve the enconomy, I know for myself I moved my businesses and money off shore after Prop H8 in California, knowing that my values are not appreciated in this country. I know many of my very wealthy friends have been doing the same. So Huge FAIL!

Sorry, you wanted marriage to be sacred, be careful what you wish for. In all fairness, I'll say that wife-beating should constitute a breach of contract (that's what marriage is, after all), and the offender should be punished accordingly.

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_V3B4TOY3SPMRI5K7KYZ5IZLN3U Kathy H

Funny how the hetero marriages have been falling apart LONG before the idea of gay marriage. I didn't think the right-wing could get any more stupid, but these people, especially Scott, have certainly attained the summit of Mt. Stupidity – the highest mountain in the U.S.! (And they accuse the left of being communist, but the color of the right is red – and red has traditionally been the color of communism.)

  • http://www.facebook.com/Matt.the.Computer.Guy Matthew Breslin

Nice picture. You'll pardon me though, if I don't take sage advice on marriage from a child. Or from those who think like one.

  • dfflick

Honestly, let's just drop the 'same sex' or the 'gay' prefix. It's just marriage.

They are getting desperate. Now gay and lesbian citizens are responsible for the economic downturn; although, they are not allowed to get married in 40+ states.

Check out the article “Gay marriage: Why Judge Walker got Proposition 8 ruling wrong on Christian Science Monitor”

The writer claims that “Marriage is a necessary defense of a woman’s sexuality and her human liberty from determined assault by men who would
turn her into a slave, a concubine – something less than fully human.”
