Mezvinsky ‘grateful’ to be part of upcoming Clinton wedding

By Lynda Waddington | 07.29.10 | 1:30 pm

To say that former Iowa Congressman Ed Mezvinsky has had a colorful past would probably be an understatement.

The 73-year-old Democrat, who not only represented Iowa in Congress but who led the Pennsylvania Democratic Party, was convicted in 2003 on several counts of fraud and was labeled by law enforcement as a “one man crime wave” who routinely perpetrated business scams. He was released from federal prison in 2008, and has reportedly been welcomed to attend the wedding of his son, Marc, to Chelsea Clinton, daughter of President Bill Clinton and Secretary of State Hillary Clinton.

“I’m a proud papa,” a teary-eyed Mezvinsky told Inside Edition in a story broadcast Wednesday night.

Mezvinsky noted that he has had to rebuild his relationship with his son in the wake of the criminal charges and sentence.

“I’m remorseful for what happened,” he said. “It was a terrible time, and I was punished for that. And I respect that and accept responsibility for what happened, and now I’m trying to move on and am grateful I have the opportunity for that.”

The wedding, which by all estimates is to be a multi-million-dollar lavish affair, is scheduled to take place Saturday in the tiny town of Rhineback, N.Y. along the Hudson River.
