Democrats on Tuesday might not reach the 60 votes needed to overcome a filibuster for the DISCLOSE Act, but they’re getting awfully close.
A spokesman for U.S. Sen. Joe Lieberman, I-Conn., just confirmed to Politico’s Ben Smith that while he will miss the vote Tuesday, he has promised Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev., that he will vote in favor of cloture if the bill comes up for a vote again — a scenario that appears increasingly likely.
Meanwhile, Greg Sargent reports that U.S. Sen. Ben Nelson, D-Neb., long speculated to be wavering on the issue, is also a yes on cloture.
The DISCLOSE Act aims to increase transparency of corporate political involvement in the wake of the U.S. Supreme Court’s Citizen United decision. The latest development leaves the bill, and Senate Democrats, in a familiar position — stuck at 59 votes, one shy of breaking a Republican filibuster and opening debate.
