The Federal Election Commission has ruled unanimously that former Iowa Democratic Party Chairman Gordon Fischer didn’t violate election law with his open support of presidential candidate Barack Obama on his blog, Iowa True Blue.

Kirk W. Tofte, a supporter of New York Sen. Hillary Clinton’s presidential campaign, said the blog became a “direct arm” of the Obama campaign after Fischer endorsed Obama in September 2007.

He also accused Fischer of raising money for Obama via his blog and then changing the site to delete evidence of a “donate” tab when Tofte questioned him on it. According to The Des Moines Register, the FEC saw no merit in the case.

In its analysis, the FEC staff said Fischer denied any coordination existed between him and the Obama campaign and said that anything he wrote on the blog was an exercise of his right to free speech. Fischer also denied soliciting donations on the blog.

The staff agreed. “There is no information to suggest that the Obama Committee is coordinating with the Fischer Web site as to its contents,” the FEC analysis said, and added there was no information to suggest the donation tab ever existed.
