Decomposed Hogs Discovered in Raccoon River

By Dien Judge | 06.18.07 | 5:13 pm

The Iowa Department of Natural Resources is trying to find out how at least 31 dead hogs ended up in the Raccoon River near Sac City.

In a statement released by the DNR on Monday, DNR environmental specialist Tim Roos stated that initial reports said at least 50 hogs were found near Haage Park in Sac City. Roos stated that the hogs were probably dumped last week, noting their advanced state of decomposition.

The public is asked to avoid the affected area in case of potential health risks. The DNR is currently interviewing local hog producers around the area for further information. Anyone with information is urged to contact the DNR Spencer Field Office at (712) 262-4177.

The DNR is also reporting that a spill of four to five gallons of hydraulic oil was discovered in the Iowa River, resulting in a visible sheen in the river near Iowa City. The DNR statement said that the spill was caused by construction equipment operated by Peterson Contractors, Inc.
