Czech Village, located on the southwest side of the Cedar River, has long been home to Cedar Rapids’ Czech heritage. Prior to the 2008 flood it was home to the National Czech & Slovak Museum and Library as well as a host of Czech-centered businesses such as Zindrick’s Restaurant, Sykora Bakery and the Czech Cottage. The area has for years been one of the city’s top tourist destinations — and is slowly returning to that former distinction thanks to rebuilding of the small economic district.
Because residential properties in Czech Village were located literally across the street from the Cedar River, few of the properties closest to the economic hub have survived. They were mostly owned and inhabited by blue-collar families who made their living as tradesmen and women throughout the community.
