Zaun declared winner in 3rd District GOP primary

By Jason Hancock | 06.08.10 | 9:57 pm

State Sen. Brad Zaun, R-Urbandale, has emerged victorious in the 3rd District Republican congressional primary, earning him the right to take on U.S. Rep. Leonard Boswell this fall.

With 202 of 338 precincts reporting, the Associated Press declared Zaun the winner with 49 percent of the vote. Former Iowa State University wrestling coach Jim Gibbons had 25 percent of the vote and former pilot Dave Funk had 19 percent.

With seven candidates in the race, many felt it would be difficult for anyone to reach the 35 percent threshold needed in order to avoid the race being decided by convention. But Zaun racked up a huge lead early in the district’s more urban areaa, especially his home county of Polk where he has served as a state legislator and mayor.

A spokesman for the Gibbons campaign just told Des Moines CBS affiliate KCCI-TV that they are not ready to concede until the rural districts officially report.
