Friday Link Love

  • In an excellent, number-crunching Kos diary, fladem call's John Kerry's 2004 decision to shut down its New Hampshire campaign and bet everything on Iowa "the best tactical decision I have ever seen a campaign make during the primaries," and says that an Iowa win is worth 14 percent in New Hampshire.
  • Also, Daniel Miessler says Ron Paul is scary, and mines quotes that will give the small-l libertarian Republicans who see Paul as the saviour of the GOP from the theocrats some pause:
"The ultimate goal of the anti-religious elites is to transform America into a completely secular nation, a nation that is legally and culturally biased against Christianity."

  • Bill Clinton has endorsed John Edwards.  Bill Clinton of Carroll, Iowa, that is.  Just one of the many names buried in the Edwards camp's list of chairs in all 99 counties.  Familiar names are Edwards' ace in the hole.  Because of his previous campaign and because of the non-secret nature of the Democratic caucus vote, Edwards has something no other candidate has (except Dennis Kucinich, who likely can't afford the steep admission price to the Iowa Democratic Party database).  Edwards has a list of people who have already voted for him once.  It's a pot of gold that, should he hold his current Iowa lead, will help him consolidate that on Jan. 14.  Or 7.  He'll be back in the state this weekend, as will Republican Mitt Romney.
  • The University of Iowa presidential search reaches endgame this weekend, and there's no better coverage than Nick Johnson's
  • Cyclone Conservatives has done a series of interviews with the fourth-, fifth- and sixth-tier GOP candidates.
  • While wind turbines and other large-scale projects are Good Things, the UK's Economist does a cost benefit analysis and says we'd get more bang for the buck just switching to compact fluorescent light bulbs.
  • The Economist also asks if recycling is worth the effort and says yes.  However, the big problem is plastic, which never really goes away, says this article (some of the pics are a bit disturbing).
  • And just for fun, a map that compares the size of state economies to those of countries around the world. Best bit: Minnesota is labeled “Norway.”
