Republicans Mariannette Miller-Meeks and Rob Gettemy — both vying for the GOP 2nd District congressional nomination — traded jabs in statements to The Iowa Republican this weekend.
Gettemy critcized Miller-Meeks, an opthamologist, for receiving a campaign donation from the American Medical Association — a group which pushed for the passage of Democrats’ health care reform this year.
Miller-Meeks fired back, renewing her opposition to “government-run health care.”
“For a guy who claims to have values, you can’t believe a word Gettemy says. He has no record to run on, nothing positive to say about himself, and has to resort to trashing my family’s good name in the last hours of this campaign to try and eke out a desperate victory. Rob Gettemy is like the old Seinfeld series, his campaign is about nothing,” said Miller-Meeks.
Meanwhile, Jeff Patch — a Miller-Meeks supporter who has launched Internet attacks on Gettemy on another candidate, Steve Rathje — issued a statement Monday morning calling Gettemy a moron.
Dr. Miller-Meeks is the strongest candidate on health care. As an ophthalmologist she will have instant credibility in the health care debate and the power to sway Congressmen with her expertise. No other candidate even comes close.
Gettemy, Miller-Meeks, Rathje, and Chris Reed, the other Republican primary candidate, have all launched attacks on one another. Last month, Rathje released a commercial urging voters to dump Miller-Meeks, who was the Republican nominee in 2008. Gettemy has called the primary lead-up a “race to the bottom.”
