In a piece in the Sioux City Journal, former Democratic Congressman Berkley Bedell not surprisingly endorses his party’s candidate, Rob Hubler of Council Bluffs, in a race against U.S. Rep. Steve King, R-Kiron. But he adds some points about partisan politics and a lack of a team approach from King affecting the district in Bedell’s view. It’s been a while since Bedell represented western Iowa (1987), but he is far from unknown among the district’s older voters. Here’s part of Bedell’s piece:
Our congressman, Mr. King, may be a fine gentleman, but he and I do not agree with how a congressman should represent the people. It breaks my heart that the team effort I felt existed when I was in Congress does not appear to me to exist here today.
It will surprise no one that as a Democrat I am supporting King’s opponent, Rob Hubler, but I do it for more than just party politics. I do it because I would like to see this district returned to where we work together as a team again, discuss any differences, and not fight with each other as to what is in the press.
