Hurley: Pro-gay ministers are ‘blatantly evil’

By Jason Hancock | 06.03.10 | 7:48 am

Chuck Hurley

Chuck Hurley, president of the politically influential Christian organization Iowa Family Policy Center, says any religious leader who supports legalized same-sex marriage is “confused at best and blatantly evil at worst.”

The statement comes in response to demands that Hurley retract an earlier statement calling members of the pro-marriage equity Iowa Interfaith Alliance “pseudo pastors.”

Iowa Interfaith Alliance delivered a letter to legislators during the 2010 General Assembly signed by more than 150 religious leaders in Iowa who support marriage rights for same-sex couples, which Hurley refers to as “state-sanctioned sodomy.”

“Yesterday, I said that I believe a pseudo pastor, meaning anyone who would knowingly lead their flock astray on issues of morality and spirituality, and so clearly violate the revealed Word of God, is a wolf in sheep’s clothing and a false shepherd,” Hurley said, later adding: “In my opinion, those who signed their name to the Interfaith Alliance petition in support of state sanctioned sodomy are not only wolves in sheep’s clothing, but they are blind leaders of the blind.”

He called on members of the Interfaith Alliance to “repent, turn to Christ, and join us in showing genuine concern for both the physical and the spiritual wellbeing of those caught up in the destructive sin of homosexuality.”

Connie Ryan Terrell, executive director of the Iowa Interfaith Alliance, responded immediately.

“Mr. Hurley is blatantly disrespectful of the many clergy from across Iowa who are supportive of marriage equality simply because he believes differently,” she said. “Mr. Hurley, who is not a pastor, has every right to his belief, as do the clergy who signed our letter in February and other clergy from across the state who support marriage equality.”

Terrell said Hurley has no business proclaiming who should and should not call themselves pastor.

“It is inappropriate and uncivil for Mr. Hurley to do so,” she said. “He should retract and apologize for his statement that clearly has no place in this public discussion.”

Well, this is exactly what you get when you try to mix one person's interpretation of “God's Law” into public policy.

I just wish that GOD, in His wisdom and omnipotence, would be just a bit more media-savvy in this day and age. I mean, we’re talking about the same God that allegedly created the Universe (just 6,000 years ago, according to some people), caused the Great Deluge, parted the Red Sea, and whose Earthbound avatar came back to life after having assumed room temperature for three days. Why does He insist on taking such a hands-off approach? We have one Book which has been translated and re-translated, interpreted and re-interpreted, until hardly anyone can agree on what it means. We have dozens of Christian denominations, each with its own unique take on what God expects of us. Wouldn’t God be a little more effective in getting us to behave decently toward one another if He would just put together a website or a television channel or at the very least a 1-800 number? There is a wide variety of contemporary social and economic issues I sure would like to get His opinion on.

To Chuck Hurley I would say this:

Exactly how is allowing Gay couples the exact same legal benefits and responsibilities that Straight couples have always taken for granted going to affect 'traditional marriage?” Marriage equality for Gay couples will have precisely ZERO impact on your life, your marriage, your church, and your children. Your church will never be forced to marry Gay couples, any more than it is forced to marry non-Christian couples. Public schools will not be forced to “teach” about Gay marriage, any more than they are forced to teach about Straight marriage.

Instead you should ask yourself why law-abiding, taxpaying Gay Americans should be forced to subsidize all the legal benefits and responsibilities that Straight couples enjoy, when we are unable to take advantage of those same incentives to marry? And since when do voters get to decide that the rights that apply to them DO NOT apply to minorities?

Please let those who feel they have a monopoly on religion continue to act as unAmerican as possible. Christianity is certainly losing its credibility it in no way appears anything close to what Christ had in mind now.

This level of extreme ignorance (and homophobia) is no longer acceptable. There is more than enough scientific research that proves that people are born gay:
    http://www.thetech.org/genetics/ask.php?id=155

“…if one identical twin was gay, the other was also gay 50% of the time. If they were fraternal twins, they were both gay 22% of the time.”

I'd love Mr. Hurley to explain how identical twins end up both being gay 50% of the time when one of them is gay. Normally there is a 5% chance that someone will be gay. With identical twins that percentage is 10 times higher. Obviously, this proves that being gay is something you're born with. (and this was only one study)

Who the heck would want to join a church that acts as hateful as these people

  • bvan

The Bible is either the word of God or it isn't. I do not understand how you can pick and chose which biblical morality you wish to enforce. Would Jesus deport the poor Mexican children or would he take them in and try to feed and cloth them? The argument seems to be gay marriage will spread AIDS into straight marriages. Not sure how that relates but does that make lesbian marriage okay?

  • bvan

David – If you are born gay than it is up to you to rise above your gayness and do the right thing and do what it takes through actions and thoughts to fit in as a straight person. God made you gay to test you. Aren't you lucky God chose you.
    **Sarcasm implied**

  • MickeyC

Mr. Hurley seems to be the product of an upbringing based on ignorance and hate, possibly even abuse. His misunderstanding of the Bible is based on lack of education and prejudice, nothing more. The people of Iowa need to let Mr. Hurley know that while they are sorry for his sad state, he really has no authority to force his evil agenda on the people of the state. We can all hope that Mr. Hurley gets profession help for his mental problems.

  • TerryInIowa

    “…sin of homosexuality.”
I just have one little question for Mr. Hurley.
What about all the other laws in the Old Testament?
Treat your body like a temple. Women must cover their heads in public. A marriage is only valid if the woman is a virgin, and if she is not, she is to be executed. In Mark, divorce is prohibited. Also prohibited are 'round haircuts', tattoos, working on the Sabbath, wearing clothes of mixed fabrics, having your fortune told, eating pork or shellfish, and playing with the skin of a pig (football). Is it because THOSE laws would force YOU to live differently? Hypocrite?

  • shadow_man

Lol! The anti-gay religious crowd will even be intolerant and bigotted towards their own kind, if their own kind has differing views. That should tell you about the anti-gay religious crowd.

  • shadow_man

To those of you using the Bible as a weapon against homosexuality, you are wrong. Homosexuality is not a sin. The Bible is constantly being taken out of context to support anti-gay views. Scholars who have studied the Bible in context of the times and in relation to other passages have shown those passages (Leviticus, Corinthians, Romans, etc) have nothing to do with homosexuality. These passages often cherry-picked while ignoring the rest of the Bible. The sins theses passages are referring to are idolatry, Greek temple sex worship, prostitution, pederasty with teen boys, and rape, not homosexuality or two loving consenting adults.

    http://www.stjohnsmcc.org/new/BibleAbuse/Biblic…
    http://www.gaychristian101.com/

Thats why Jesus never mentions it as well. There is nothing immoral, wrong, or sinful about being gay. Jesus, however, clearly states he HATES hypocrites. If you preach goodness, then promote hate and twist the words of the Bible, you are a hypocrite, and will be judged and sent to hell. Homosexuals will not go to hell, hypocrites will.

This is very similar to the religious bigots of the past, where they took Bible passages to condone slavery, keep women down, and used Bible passages to claim blacks as curses who should be enslaved by the white man. People used God to claim that blacks marrying whites was unnatural, and not of God's will.

  • shadow_man

For those of you claiming homosexuality is a “lifestyle”, that is a false and ignorant statement. Homosexuality is not a choice. Just like you don't choose the color of your skin, you cannot choose whom you are sexually attracted to. If you can, sorry, but you are not heterosexual, you are bi-sexual. Virtually all major psychological and medical experts agree that sexual orientation is NOT a choice. Most gay people will tell you its not a choice. Common sense will tell you its not a choice. While science is relatively new to studying homosexuality, studies tend to indicate that its biological.

Gay, Straight Men's Brain Responses Differ

    http://www.springerlink.com/content/w27453600k5…
    http://blogs.discovermagazine.com/80beats/2008/…

There is overwhelming scientific evidence that homosexuality is not a choice. Sexual orientation is generally a biological trait that is determined pre-natally, although there is no one certain thing that explains all of the cases. “Nurture” may have some effect, but for the most part it is biological.

And it should also be noted that:
“It is worth noting that many medical and scientific organizations do believe it is impossible to change a person's sexual orientation and this is displayed in a statement by American Academy of Pediatrics, American Counseling Association, American Association of School Administrators, American Federation of Teachers, American Psychiatric Association, American Psychological Association, American School Health Association, Interfaith Alliance Foundation, National Association of School Psychologists, National Association of Social Workers, and National Education Association.”

  • shadow_man

The National Library of Medicine pubs confirm that sexual orientation is natural, biologically induced in the first trimester of pregnancy, morally neutral, immutable, neither contagious nor learned, bearing no relation to an individuals ability to form deep and lasting relationships, to parent children, to work or to contribute to society.

From the American Psychological Association: homosexuality is normal; homosexual relationships are normal.

The American Academy of Pediatrics, American Psychological Asociation and American Psychiatric Asociation have endorsed civil marriage for same-sex couples because marriage strengthens mental and physical health and longevity of couples, and provides greater legal and financial security for children, parents and seniors.

America's premier child/mental health associations endorse marriage equality.

  • shadow_man

This was taken from another poster that shows why we need to legalize gay marriage. If you don't feel for this person after reading it, you simply aren't human.

“I am not sure what our President thinks of this dicission but coming from a poor family and knowing what discrimination is all about I would assume he would not care if “Gays” have equal rights. The whole reason why they are asking for rights to be considered married is from the same reason why I would be for it. My own life partner commited suicide in our home with a gun to his heart. After a 28 year union I was deprived to even go his funeral. We had two plots next to each other. But because we did not have a marriage cirtificate “(Legal Document)” of our union his mother had him cremated and his ashes taken back to Missouri where we came from. That is only one example how painful it is. His suicide tramatized me so much and her disregard for my feelings only added to my heartach. That happened on March 21 of 2007 and I still cannot type this without crying for the trauma I have to endure each day. Oh did I mention I am in an electric wheelchair for life? Yes I am and it is very diffacult to find another mate when you are 58 and in a wheelchair. “

  • shadow_man

The American Psychological Association, the American Psychiatric Association, and the National Association of Social Workers state:

“There is no scientific basis for distinguishing between same-sex couples and heterosexual couples with respect to the legal rights, obligations, benefits, and burdens conferred by civil marriage.”

    http://www.courtinfo.ca.gov/courts/supreme/high…

Thus, mental health professionals and researchers have long recognized that being homosexual poses no inherent obstacle to leading a happy, healthy, and productive life, and that the vast majority of gay and lesbian people function well in the full array of social institutions and interpersonal relationships.

    http://www.courtinfo.ca.gov/courts/supreme/high…

The research and clinical literature demonstrate that same-sex sexual and romantic attractions, feelings, and behaviors are normal and positive variations of human sexuality.

    http://www.apa.org/pi/lgbt/resources/therapeuti…

The longstanding consensus of the behavioral and social sciences and the health and mental health professions is that homosexuality per se is a normal and positive variation of human sexual orientation.
