Republican gubernatorial contender Rod Roberts told The Iowa Independent Thursday that the current political climate favors an underdog candidate like himself.
“I believe 2010 is a good year for someone to emerge because the people are engaged in a way that I haven’t seen in my adult life,” said Roberts, a state lawmaker from Carroll. “I believe they’re very open to someone new with a different attitude. It’s a great election year to be that third candidate to two others who are better known.”
With far less cash on hand than his primary opponents, Roberts has banked on televised debates for exposure.
The last debate — characterized by spats between Republican front-runners Terry Branstad and Bob Vander Plaats — was good for the Roberts campaign, the candidate said.
“The contrast was very apparent between me and the other two candidates,” Roberts said. “The grassroots feedback has been extremely positive … I think we picked up a lot of support.”
