Gay marriage draws hundreds to Iowa

By Adam B Sullivan | 05.19.10 | 10:41 am

Most of the state’s same-sex marriages so far have been non-Iowa couples, numbers from the Iowa Department of Public Health released Tuesday show.

Since last April, Iowa has granted marriage licenses to 2,000 gay couples. Around 800 of those couples reside in Iowa. The rest — totaling more than 1,000 marriages — came from other states, including 200 from Illinois, more than 150 from Missouri, and more than 100 from Nebraska.

Among Iowa residents, the county-by-county breakdown offers no surprises. Polk County leads with almost 500 same-sex marriages. Scott and Johnson counties were next with more than 230 gay unions each. Most Iowa counties reported no married same-sex couples.
