Iowans for Tax Relief President Ed Failor Jr. launched a robocall Wednesday morning promoting the group’s endorsement of Republican gubernatorial hopeful Terry Branstad.
The call came from a number at the Iowa Vision 2020 Conference, an operation sponsored by the Branstad campaign.
In the call, Failor lauded Branstad for opposition to taxes and said the tax watchdog group will work with Branstad if elected. The anti-tax group announced its Republican primary endorsement for Branstad on Tuesday.
Iowans for Tax Relief has been a polarizing player in the lead-up to the gubernatorial election in November. Last month, the group urged a probe into misconduct by incumbent Gov. Chet Culver‘s administration. The Culver camp dismissed the claims as “illogical and groundless.”
The group has also received criticism for its Branstad endorsement. While Branstad has committed during the campaign to slashing taxes — especially on business — he approved two sales tax increases during his first gubernatorial tenure.
“While we have not always agreed with Terry Branstad, we judge a leader’s actions by the end result and there is no denying he has been a true friend of Iowa taxpayers,” Failor said.
