Libertarians join Secretary of State race

By Lynda Waddington | 05.17.10 | 9:20 am

A 22-year-old Des Moines man announced Sunday that he will seek the office of Iowa Secretary of State as a member of the Libertarian Party.

Jake Porter is currently pursuing a bachelor’s degree in business administration. He has worked as the business manager for a weekly newspaper, and owns the Des Moines Free Press.  Currently he is also employed in inventory for a large Des Moines retailer.

Porter has managed and worked with several political campaigns, according to a press release, and is a member of the Libertarian National Committee.

“The Secretary of State primarily deals with business and elections, which ware two areas I know first-hand,” Porter said in a prepared statement.

Incumbent Michael Mauro, a Democrat, will appear on the November ballot along with the victor of the three-way Republican primary between George Eichhorn, Chris Sanger and Matt Schultz. The primary election will be held June 8.

With the addition of Porter, the Libertarian Party of Iowa now has candidates competing for the office of governor, lieutenant governor, secretary of state and U.S. House Congressional Districts 1 and 2.
