a slip of the tongue, not an exaggeration
Chase, I think you are reading too much into a slip of the tongue. This is kind of like when Obama said 10,000 people died in a tornado instead of 10 people. He wasn't exaggerating or uninformed, he just didn't phrase things the right way.

Edwards has been focusing not just on domestic issues, but also on foreign policy issues, including global poverty. I think what he was trying to convey was that people shouldn't assume he hasn't spent any serious time on foreign policy.

He discussed a trip to Russia with bloggers in Dec.
Before his official announcement in Des Moines back in December, Edwards talked about a recent trip to Russia with Jack Kemp.

http://www.cfr.org/publication.html?id=8142

Your phrase parsing is unfortunate
As the update notes, Edwards was obviously talking in general terms about issues he's been working on and involved in and not saying he's been living overseas for that period. To say otherwise seems rather ludicrous.

For example Edwards was picked by the Council on Foreign Relations to co-chair a task force on American-Russian relations (http://www.cfr.org/publication/8142/john_edwards_and_jack_kemp_cochair_council_task_force_on_russianamerican_relations.html)

“More than a decade and a half after the fall of the Berlin Wall, U.S.-Russian relations continue to follow a pattern in which high hopes for cooperation alternate with disappointment,” said Edwards. “Our effort will examine this critical but challenging relationship and suggest a strategy for dealing with our differences and making the most of opportunities to work together.”

The Task Force will focus on seven main areas: co-operating against terrorism, non-proliferation of weapons of mass destruction, strategic energy partnerships, (de-)democratization, Russia’s relations with its neighbors, Cold War legacy issues, and Chechnya.

The results of that task force can be seen here: http://www.cfr.org/publication/9997/

As Russia deciends even more into autocratism, the suggestions of its authors seem even more relevant.

Its just one example, but a good one, and you fail to even mention this in your post. Instead of focusing on the conent of what his experience in foreign policy has been over the last few years, you choose to instead to play "gotcha" word games.
