Loebsack goes after Glenn Beck over Czech museum

By Jason Hancock | 04.20.10 | 8:39 am

U.S. Rep. Dave Loebsack, D-Mt. Vernon, has fired back at talk radio host and Fox News personality Glenn Beck over statements he made that called into question federal funds that went to the National Czech and Slovak Museum in Cedar Rapids.

Beck listed the money for the museum in a list he called “a few examples of unbelievable waste being tolerated… Remember, this is your money.”

$500,000 for exhibits at the Czech and Slovak Museum and Library in Cedar Rapids — what about the Serb, Croatian and Albanian exhibits? Don’t we care about them?

Loebsack wasted little time in responding to Beck.

“It is regrettable that in the current state of political discourse that ill-informed rhetoric is a hotter commodity than an understanding of the economic and recovery needs of ordinary Iowans,” Loebsack said in a statement. “While I applaud any effort to raise the issue of government waste, I must disagree with the assessment that funds to repair and renovate the flooded properties of the National Czech and Slovak Museum & Library in Cedar Rapids, Iowa is wasteful.”

The museum was severely damaged during the floods of 2008, with estimated repair costs at $11 million.

“Just this evening the museum opened a new exhibit, ‘Rising Above the Flood – The Story of People and The Flood.’ The re-opening of buildings and exhibits represents the type of hard work and dedication to their community that Mr. Beck himself claims to admire,” Loebsack said. “Furthermore, the museum reopening carries the potential for job creation, further economic development, and increased tourism in Cedar Rapids.”

Liberal blogger John Deeth made a prediction of how Beck would likely respond.

I’m predicting Beck’s response: “If you rearrange the letters in Dave Loebsack, it spells ‘So Backed Veal’.” Which may cost him the PETA vote.

Loebsack said he will be sending Beck and his staff several copies of the DVD “In Deep Water: The Flood of 2008,” a documentary that highlights the devastation that Cedar Rapids, and the state of Iowa, suffered because of the floods.

The truly funny thing about Glenn Beck is there are some people who actually believe his shtick. His radio and television comedy programs have a small but devout group of followers who apparently don't realize the key difference between him and Stephen Colbert is that Colbert works with a live audience.
Yet more justification for mental health parity as well as improvements in education system in this country.

    • capmotion

Well, another key difference between Beck abd Colbert is that Colbert is giftedly brilliant, whereas Beck is simply a glib frontman for others' research and thinking.

      • RegularJoe

Well, Colbert does have a team of writers who take everything he says during the show and transcribes it after!

        • capmotion

Oh, indeed he does, but he was a writer before he was a performer, and is a very bright guy. In contrast, Glenn was a drunk drug addict DJ.

Don't get me wrong; my personal politics are more in line with the constitutional things Glenn mouths [although not his Rev. Jim Jones extremist views about religion, politics, or the Rapture!], but he is a propagandist for others' intellect – he is not the intellect himself.

I more prefer Rev. Jim Ignatowski!

It is not clear to me why people always rise to Beck's ranting, narcissitic bait in such things, giving him wider and wider exposure. If you keep responding to cretinism, you get more cretinism. True conservatives such as me realize that Beck is a glib and smooth mouthpiece for shadowy researchers and script writers who use his mouth and tear-duct talents to advance their agenda, and naive people then think it is Glenn who is the author, promoter, thinker. He confessed years ago he is merely an entertainer, and he should not be given more credit than his own words. Sure, I listen to him too, just as I would stop to watch the results of a train wreck, but no thinking person who has studied the Framers or the Republic for long [he confessed 8 months ago that he had then been studying them for all of 2 whole years!], some of us for decades and decades, think him to be other than an effective carnival barker, so don't be victimized by his sideshow performance and pay money to see the bearded lady.

Glenn has stated that he doesn't care about politics or anything he talks about – he just does it for entertainment. Why anyone takes this loud-mouthed idiot seriously is beyond me.
